When Intel came out with processors decades back Pentium(1993), Pentium II, ..and celeron (1998) for low cost computers.

Source : Comparison of Intel_processors

Now latest processors from intel: Core i3,Core i5,Core i7, 4th generation processor but we also can see latest laptop with Pentium or Celeron processor

HP's new Introduction ..Celeron processor Celeron processors was introduced in 1998.almost two decade old.

My Questions
1) Are we buying very old design Processors with newly designed computers?

I need a computer to perform the following

a. Create report, using Excel, Create Presentation powerpoint, create documents using word
b. I may open multiple applications like excel, word powerpoint etc.
c. Use browser(Multiple windows ) to surf internet
d. Local storage (Not cloud)
e. No Games.

2) Can you recommend a laptop please.
Low budget preferably around S$500

3) I saw the laptop comes with only 2 GB. I believe this is insufficient and computer will be slow.
- What memory size I should get?
- What CPU and What Speed?

Thank you all

Pentium / celeron / i series are all marketing brand names from intel

The stuff you are going to be using doesn't take a lot of requirement
At least a core 2 duo

2 gb ram is the min requirement to run vista / win 7, and I don't recommend it

If you are looking for a cheap laptop,
I would suggest SSD with 4 gb ram
Processor speed doesn't matter much in this case / but skip Atom pls

You might want to wait till IT fair 19-22 Mar to see whether there are cheap clearance laptop for sales

i agree... just wait ...

ram can always be upgraded ...

however, a laptop with SSD wont be cheap...

for your usage, i believe the pentium quads will suffice. the amd A8's will be good too. need ram upgrading though. most cheap laptops will come with 2gb. they want u to buy their upgrade to 4 or 8gb. Wait for IT show..

then ask them upgrade... sweet talk them to help you upgrade . or tell them dun want freebies and just want ram upgrade. lol... thats what i do most often.. antivirus can just buy or download free ones.. those 19 in 1 accessories are collecting dust in my room...

just get a old laptop core 2 duo with 4GB ram on ebay , and buy a SSD.

i am using a 2008 laptop with SSD and a customised lite version of windows with bloat removed, Just as fast

No problems with MS office

from your requirement, you dont need something high end, an i3 or a pentium quad would suffice..

you could also just get an AMD A6 or a8 quad core.. it would suffice your usage since you mainly use it for office work in my opinion..

saw this on qoo10

Qoo10 - Lenovo G4045 14inch AMD Quad Core A8-6410 (2.0GHz) Notebook - Quad Cor... : Computer & Game
Looks like they replaced the Celeron N2940 with an AMD SKU model used to be G40-30
What a pity the Celeron was much better.
