Hey there,

My problem started when I tried to move a file from a hard disk to my laptop. Firstly, the file copied immediately and there was an error when I tried to open it. Basically, the file seemed empty and I just could not copy the file over.

The real problem began when I cannot access my control panel. Everytime i click on it, it causes windows explorer to crash. I tried searching around for solutions. I tried restoring the system and yet the problem keeps coming back. Is it cause now the hard disk is infected with a virus? Cause it works fine after a restore, but everytime i plug in the hard disk, the same problem occurs. I have deleted the problematic file from both hard disk and laptop.

I tried to go through all the .cpl file method. Below are the .cpl files that will cause windows to crash.

appwiz.cpl

desk.cpl

powercfg.cpl

wscui.cpl

firewall.cpl

hdwwiz.cpl

The below 3 does not cause a crash, but it won't open either

bthprops.cpl

irprops.cpl

infocardcpl.cpl

So may I know which is causing the problem? Is there any 3rd party file that I should delete? And is the hard disk probably infected? Hope you guys can help a noob like me. Thanks!
