Could I7 desktop Haswell been better?

Haha guess I will be sticking to my 3.8ghz E8500 for a little while more.

Just played Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider and Black Ops 2. Still very playable.

Yes but it could still been used as a CPU cache although performance boost might not be any way spectacular now. In future might be very different though.


Performance wise it could be another 10% better without needing Intel engineers to lift their fingers much and yet they are simply not doing.


It can also be possible they are saving all these for the upcoming Haswell-E, which give them possible performance edge over their mainstream cousin. Hell I wouldnt be surprise if they might even leave the FIVR out since they are not using the same socket and modification can be made.


They probably realised that their $999 flagship chip need to be perform faster than their $3xx mainstream chip.


Anyway OC I believe is really based on passion now rather than getting real performance, the idea where u always wanted to push ur clock faster than what u suppose to be having just simply excite the idea for enthusiasts.

Not no competition, just a lack of it at the moment. If Intel makes a mistake like they did with Netburst, AMD will catch up.

So another year, another chipset? Other than sata express not sure what's added in the new one. Also thanks to the haswell refresh we won't see significant change until broadwell arrives? Looks like haswell has extended lifespan compared to sandy bridge.

Its quite sad, this is what we get from zero competition... continuous milking with minimal performance gain and backward progression in heat/power performance... If this goes on we will be more interested and focus in progression of 3rd party CPU cooler rather than CPU itself...



Anyone who can make a permanent sub zero degree cooling solution with reasonable price will definitely gain more attention to enthusiast rather than CPU now. This haswell oven seriously need to be frozen



If not we can hope that someone might design a easy-to-use delidding tool for Haswell with minimal risk of damage.


P.S: I really hope that the Haswell refresh will bring a glimmer of hope for us. Slightly less power hungry (I mean CPU alone, power saving with IGP ON is useless to most PC user), less heat, and hopefully faster. The power-performance ratio for performance segment need to really buck up.

Just migrate to colder climate.

(i) Setup your PC casing in an unheated room or even outside in the garden.
(ii) Run USB/HDMI cables to your heated computer room.

Permanent sub-zero cooling achieved.

I rmb some geek in some Xtreme forum there actually did that... They place the rig setup outside their window with a movable tray.


And they did alot of benchmark during winter...


If only SG is blessed with winter.

But judging from the progression of desktop CPUs lately I think we are better sticking to our good old Core 2 Duos. Unless you really need the power of Haswell for other applications.

Now that PC is almost dead... I think the next revolutionary jump will be quantum computer.


Who knows the next quantum notebook or even smart phone will be stronger than even the fastest OCable 8 core Haswell E and GTX Quad Titan SLI combined together... Probably require way less power and heat output. I doubt there is a need for even desktop version.




Imagine plugging in your Iphone to a 4K Ultra HD resolution OLED 3D display and could run crysis 3 with hundred of FPS at max setting with 16X AA and 32X AF? Sound too orgasmic? Probably OC will be dead by den because it will be way overkill even if you underclock it. It will be a hell of a wait though. and will probably that cost of that Iphone will be in many digits as well...
