CPU and PSU Issue

Hello all, happy new year!

I have a computer that starts up with the following message

"Power supply surges detected during the previous power on.

ASUS Anti-Surge was triggered to protect system from unstable power supply unit.

Press F1 to Run SETUP"

When I entered the BIOS, it shows that 5V Voltage at +8V and its highlighted in red.

Is it that my PSU is faulty and needs to be changed? Sometimes after restarting a few times, I am able to go log back into Windows, but for now it seems that my desktop is dead.

If your PSU is under warranty, suggest you get it tested at the distro.

Otherwise, time for a new PSU.

If the PSU tested OK, disable the Asus Anti-Surge so that your system can boot.

When 5v raised to 8v, if real, power supply should not be able to turn on as power supply self protection circuit should trigger that.

If you can turn on and get into bios. Chances is protection circuit at mother board trigger that message. Very high chance problem is in mother board.

so you meaning the 8v at bios is a wrong reading and that motherboard is an issue? Went to read online they mentioned that usually asus motherboard is more sensitive to volt changes

I did disable the anti surge. the cpu just keep trying to boot up, then restart. after 3 times it went into diagnostic.

I tried to go to the 5V there and put ignore the voltage. but still the same system can't go in still.

Looks like a bad PSU or MB. Have to test at distro or with a spare to determine which is the culprit.

Distributor, as in Corbell, Convergent etc

The reading of voltage is thru and analog to digital conversion via a power controller chip on motherboard.

Best way is to find a multi meter to check the actual output of power supply. ATX power supply output 3.3v, 5v and 12v (also -12v). No 8v supply. If the power supply is bad and protection circuit within power supply did not stop a wrong output, worse case 5v output as 8v, your harddisk and many other components may be burnt already.
If 12v is outputting at 8v, chances is you cannot even go bios.
