Degree - Kaplan/ Aventis/ SAA

Hi all,

Would appreciate your advice.
Due to fund restriction, I have sorted out 3 courses offered by 3 different institutions:

Kaplan
Birmingham City University - BA (Hons) in International Finance

Aventis
University of Derby - BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance

SAA
Plymouth University - BA (Hons) in Accounting and Finance

I am thinking of going to Aventis, but not sure whether the lecturers are encouraging or in good knowledge.

Hi. Did you consider the UoL international programme? They have decent banking/accounting and finance programmes. Offered by SIM, Kaplan and Stansfield.

Yes, but I can't afford the course fee.
I know UOL is very reputable, especially in accounting.

My budget is only $12,000 to $14,000, my company didn't sponsor, so have to fork out my own money.

Additionally, I know that only Kaplan is offering the fastest UOL program. Stansfield and SIM, their UOL won't recognize your diploma or advance diploma and you have to start all over again from diploma level, it will take approximately 3 years with > $20,000 course fee.

Considering both the duration and course fee, I will not consider UOL due to my budget.

Don't takr those top up deg, as good as toilet roll. Unless you are already in mid management roles and simply need paper qualification to climb further. That's what top up degrees are for, not to kick start a whole new career opportunities.

Take a look at Kaplan Murdoch single major. 16k, 16 months course, 9 modules. A little top up from your top ups but gives a bit more value.

Fyi. Bcu is a rubbish uni in uk. People go to Uni of Birmingham, rejects then go to bcu

Does your company recognise the university degrees that you stated here?
If not, you are just wasting money in your bid to have higher salary or promotion.
I suggest you work a bit more to gain your company recognition to secure sponsorship or save more money to apply for a ranked university degree. No point rushing for a cheap and fast, but weaker degree.

You may use global ranking charts to find a sufficiently recognised degree (final decision still depends on your company),

I concurred, top up degree is suitable only for working professionals not full time students without working experience.

it may be brunt and brutal, a top up degree typically last only 9 to 12 months so you will not gain as much knowledge as a 3 year full fledged degree but it is basically a piece of paper to help you progress in your career. just like a driving license essentially, with it , it might not prove that you are a F1 Driver but without it, even if you can drive like lewis hamilton, you cannot drive legally.

Singapore is a paper chase country, degree , part time, top up , full time + experience will always fare better than a diploma with experience. Now even lots of ITE graduates getting degree. Singapore economy is opening up to the region by the end of the year with free influx of talent across borders, so it will only get more intense.

in terms of ranking, it does fluctuate, base on 2015 ranking

Derby is 50, plymouth is 68, BCU is 88.

better to get accounting and finance - consider 2 majors vs 1

as to faculty, basically all use adjunct faculty so it will not varies too much.

bottomline, you must be committed, it's a top up degree, its not NUS or NTU , its faster but it doesnt means its easier . these 3 typically focus on coursework vs UOL which is 100% examination.

Franzz, thanks for your advice. I am not fresh grads but a working adult with more than 6 years experience, now doing part time advance diploma finishing this May. This is the reason why I am only looking for top up degree.

since you have 6 year work experience, you should know your stuff pretty well. how about self-study for a UOL degree? it'll be within your budget - Accounting and Finance (BSc) | University of London International Programmes. it might fit your schedule better since you are working.

your current company might recognize the 3 certs that you listed, but think long term - other companies might not. a UOL cert will open up more opportunities for you because of the better recognition. I think it is a good investment in terms of time and money.

why the time constraint anyway? there are no short cuts to education.

alternatively, why not consider kaplan-royal holloway?

Royal Holloway is a good consideration, most final year programmes from london such as RH and Kingston has similar admission requirements

• Polytechnic Diploma holders
• Global Diploma from Kaplan Higher Education Institution or Kaplan Higher Education Academy
• Private diploma holders (subject to university’s approval)

Most will have intake in April/May, so if you could, visit their campus and get a consultation, both Aventis and Kaplan are at DG MRT
