Haiz...i finally got my visa after an agonising waiting of 37 Days! Guess their tourist and students going back australia backlog must be overwhelming!
Lucky you applied before booking ur flight ticket!
Ya, I think their immigration side is very busy.
Their passport application is also facing lots of delay.
I applied my visa a few months back and it was almost immediately granted within a few minutes.

Which part of Australia you visiting?
Bear in mind that some states still require to do covid tests on arrival, eg NSW and QLD, but they can be self administered.

Melbourne don't need to test.
But Sydney need to do self test but cannot do the test in the airport.
Need to do it in the hotel / place of residence, meaning u can't take public transport to the hotel/ place of residence.
From Mel to Syd is considered domestic if u had stayed in Melb for X no of days, then no need to test.
I can't remember what is X no of days, perhaps 7 days, please check nearer the date.

he probably went to apply visa 600 instead of ETA visa AKA visa 601. for holidays <3 months visa 601 is sufficient which cost 20 AUD. visa 600 allows him to stay for 12 months in the country.

Download the app for ETA and DPD (Digital Passenger Declaration).

ETA
Have the passports on hand to scan NFC and take photo.
Payment via card.
Approval should be almost instant if have all the documents ready.
**Do note different visa different cost and purpose**

DPD
If fully vaccinated, have all the vaccine cert hardcopy ready on hand. Or use another device to take photo from. Certificates must be from official sources. Otherwise, its manual filling of each field for each vaccine shot for brand/type and date.
If S'porean, can use Healthhub app for obtaining certs.
