Deliding Integrated Heat Spreader

Has any adventurous soul tried deliding Integrated Heat Spreader and replacing default thermal paste from Intel? It seems it is able to lower the temp 10 to 20 degree celsius. Hope to hear your views and experience if you have tried.

so far I have seen people delid Ivy Bridge processors and replace the thermal paste. The temp improvement is worth the risk IMO.

delidding is actually quite easy to do. You just need to be careful not to cut too deeply into the core. and by replacing the thermal paste you get a huge huge temp improvement it's ridiculous to think that Intel even dare to cut costs to this extent.

I highly recommend everyone to do it. for even non over clockers...

The main thing about whether its worth or not depends on your pocket. I assume warranty is void and you cannot RMA next time.

If you cannot afford to risk killing the CPU because of $$$, then don't try.

So what do you gain from lower temps?

Don't get me wrong because I do it myself. I understand the risk. I also killed CPUs before. But I do it as a hobby. Removing the lid lower temps, improve overclocking. If I killed the CPU, I will get another one from SLS.

But results are marginal. 200-300MHz improvement looks cool for a hobbyist but doesn't do much for real world improvements. 3-5% at most?

So if you ask me whether its worth it? The answer is NO. Lower temps don't improve anything. I see most overheating cases due to clogged HSFs and poor ventilation. Something which delidding do not solve.

But I still do it for fun of it. So, one needs to understand the risk involved and what he/she wants to achieve. Its not about doing it for the sake of doing it.

And yes, the number one issue I face with systems in general is clogged HSFs and vents. A good clean-up does wonders.

I see most overheating cases due to clogged HSFs and poor ventilation. Something which delidding do not solve.

But I still do it for fun of it. So, one needs to understand the risk involved and what he/she wants to achieve. Its not about doing it for the sake of doing it.
