DIY my own pc

Hi all,

happy new year! i was thinking of building my own desktop PC but have encountered several obstacles. mainly i don't know which CPU or mother board to use.

i use my PC solely for
1. surfing net
2. watching movies and tv shows
3. playing music
4. Microsoft office
5. Windows video/ movie editor

i don't usually play games with my computer but i like to open many windows/ applications so i reckon i should need more ram. i do enjoy listening to high quality music and HD movies. so do i need a better sound and graphic card?

i understand that to build a PC, i'll need the following

1. motherboard + CPU bundle ----> which should i pick? there are so many choices and i don't know which 1 to buy please advise

2. i intent to get 2TB of hard disk as the difference between 1 and 2 TB is about $30 only

3. sound card, i don't need those sound cards supporting to 5.1, 7.1 type as i'm only gonna be using a normal 2.1. which sound card should i choose? please advise

4. as for graphic card, i don't use my pc to play games but i certainly do enjoy watching HD movies so which 1 is for me? please advise

5. Ram. i was thinking of using DDR3 8gb ram

6.which type of casing and power supply should i use?

7. do i need to buy a network card to tap my wifi at home?

Before any recommendations, what is your budget?

Whatever it is, you definitely don't need a dedicated graphics card to watch HD video so don't need to buy one. Just use onboard graphics.

For starters, i5-4440 + asrock H81M DGS
kingston value 2x4gb ram
wd blue 2tb / seagate 2tb
128gb ssd for OS, main applications for smoother user experience.
superflower hx500w will do.
Any nice casing that you like.

Somehow i think it is good for you to go for apu rig. For the home theatre pc can consider that with a good integrated graphics over intel hd. Not sure whether keveri based chip has true audio support. If it does it will be a bonus for you also.

for brand and part, if you are lazy guy, you can choose to buy all the part from the same distributor who is located closer to where you live. if any thing happen to your computer next time, easier to repair and locate problem as they cannot tai chi the problem away to other people.

cpu - just get the cheapest i5 and motherboard or second hand one is good enough for you.

hdd- get 2tb if you need it, i advise you to get a ssd as your boot partition

sound card - if you are using a normal 2.1 sound system, with or without soundcard can hardly give you any different. onboard soundcard is enough.

graphic card - you do not really need one if you are just watching video. just get a mother board which support hdmi .

ram - 8gb is more than enough.

case - case depend on whether you want a big or small cpu. actually, i would get a mini itx setup if i was you.

thanks for your promptly replies. actually i'm a noob at PC. most of the technical terms u guys mentioned i don't even know what is it. lol.

but i guess the gist of it is

1. no need graphic card if i'm only using it for movies. just get a board with HDMI port to connect to my monitor? by doing this i can get HD quality movies already?

2. no need sound card as the on board 1 is good enough?

3. use normal i5 chip?

so i just get a relatively good mother board that have true audio and HDMI port and i'm good to go? whoa if that's the case the PC should be reasonably affordable.

the damage should be below 1000 right?

1. Yes, anything with HDMI or DVI port will be fine depending on what your monitor accepts.
2. Yes, if its not good enough you can always add a dedicated sound card later.
3. Yes i5 or i3 even is good enough.

Yup below $1000 is definitely possible. Need OS and monitor?

Way below 1k.

The thing is your usage of pc doesnt even require an i5 to begin with. A regular i3 or an AMD APU would suffice your needs. I suggest 2 options and its up to you to decide on what you want. Cant go wrong with either.

Maybe replace the H81M-GL with a H81M-DGS and the WD Green for a Seagate or equivalent 7200rpm, but apart from that all's good. Chassis can consider the Sharkoon M-A/W1000 also about the same price.

Hi all, initially i thought i'll need around at least 1500 (not including monitor, keyboard, mouse, speaker and etc). but after listening to everyone's valuable advise, i can now safely say i saved at least 3 to 400 bucks. thank u all so much. you guys are awesome

dont even think u need a i5 for that type of usage
can downgrade more if u want too
