I'm not sure if I should post this is the hardware clinic or the networking clinic, but currently I'm using an old 2.5" WD Element HDD and connecting it to my Asus router to use it as a mini "cloud storage", but this WD Element HDD keep auto disconnecting from either my laptop or my TV (connected using DLNA).

Currently I am not sure if the fault lies with the TV's DLNA interface, or the Asus Router being unstable, or is just the old WD Element HDD auto spin down (my chief suspect).

I wish to solve this issue by either buying a WD MyCloud or a Seagate Personal Cloud but I'm afraid after spending money on these 2 external "cloud" HDD the problem continues to surface. Any advise on how to have a stable fuss free connection between my laptop/TV and the "cloud" HDD? I'm using it only to stream movies stored in the HDD.

Thanks :D

If I direct the WD Element HDD to laptop and watch a full length movie straight from the HDD everything works fine.

And I don't have another HDD to test it out :(

I have tried to read other forums online and most people say is due to the HDD hibernating or spin down after some "inactivity" but some forums also say is due to Asus router firmware not optimized and again some forums say DLNA works differently for different TV brands.

from WD own website:
Most WD external hard drives will spin down (enter into power saver mode) after 10 minutes of drive inactivity. Once the drive is accessed again, the drive will exit from the power saver mode and spin back up.

so i dun think its the router issues, unless ur router can always make hdd stay awake. :o

but still prefer u test with another ext hdd though :s8:

See if I can find another spare one and try lo to eliminate the router or TV hahaha.

I guess to play safe after testing another HDD I get a Seagate Personal Cloud lo since they don't seem to have the auto spin down problem.
