Hi, thanks for coming in to help/read this thread.

I have a Crucial m500 240gb ssd bought last year December. So up to now, it's been 6 months.

Recently, i installed crystal disk info and saw that my writes to the ssd is unusually high.

Powered on: 211 times
Work Time: 521 hours,
BUT Data written: 2416GB!! = 2.4TB
That means the ssd is being written to at an average of 4GB per hour of usage..Is that normal??

What could be causing the problem? Could it be insufficient ram causing the large writes to the ssd?
I usually use up to 85% of my 8gb DDR-3 1333 Mhz ram and swap usage is about 30 to 40% most of the time according to rainmeter.

Should i be getting more ram to prevent the computer from writing stuff to the ssd? Or do i even need to be worrying about this?

Thanks for all the help i can get!

I googled that and there are some saying that the system will crash if the system needs memory but cannot find memory to use if page file is disabled.

I am already using 85% of the available ram... so I am worried that i might bump against the ram ceiling sooner rather than later.

Does anyone know whether writing 4gb per hour on average to the SSD is considered normal?? I have seen some numbers on other forums and they don't seem to be having so much writes at all. Some were saying 1+ TB after 1 plus year of use.

If you're curious, maybe can use Task Manager to review which processes are writing a lot to disk. Can give you some hints of a write-intensive problematic application or misconfiguration.

No page file will cause that kind of massive writes in 6 months. What is your normal usage of your computer like? You do a lot of torrenting per month or copy hd movie files to and from your computer all the time?

You might have some rougue program causing the anomaly, maybe try reinstalling windows.

That's odd. My m500 crucial don't even write that high. Around 500mb** per hour... boot drive ssd some more.

Actually i just did a clean format a few days back...(so shouldnt be a rogue program?)
I use spotify everyday, chrome (around 20 tabs open when i start chrome), heavy use of excel and word, no torrenting and have around 30gb of steam games on the PC(though i rarely touch the games). And run a XP on virtual box for a conversion program occasionally(once a week?)

Will installing intel rst or other drivers help?

Or can i limit the page file to 2gb instead of my current 8gb?

You can limit it to 2gb but I don think that's the cause of the large writes. Your conversion program could be the one writing so much?

Yep. you are only getting 1.6GB writes on average per hour of usage. I averaged mine. It's like 5GBs per hour! I jsut checked my laptop too. It averages 5GBs per hour as well.

2938.2GB written over 652 hours of runtime: Avg = 4.5GBs written per hour of operation.
They run similar programs...
Is it safe to say it is a rogue program since most people do not seem to be getting this kind of high writes?

Maybe because mine is SandForce based? Compression via Durawrite may have helped it reduce the amount of writes.

I disabled pagefile at one point, but I found it the niggles that come with it a nuisance and just re-enabled paging

(btw, only started heavy VM-ing for the last 5 weeks, conversion program in XP)

Do what ykgoh suggested, maybe leave your computer on for a week to accumulate more data then you'll be able to tell which program is doing heavy writes.

I don't think sandforce controller is the main reason.
This is my 256gb samsung 840 pro.

Also, this is my main and only drive.
