This video explores how emotions can negatively impact our financial decision-making, leading to what is known as a money disorder. Financial psychologists Brad and Ted Klontz categorize these disorders into three main types:
- Money Avoidance (1:20-3:08): Involves being uncomfortable with money, leading to destructive habits like financial denial (ignoring bills or account balances) or financial rejection (avoiding financial growth due to guilt or low self-esteem).
- Money Worship (3:11-4:56): Occurs when people use money as a way to alleviate emotional pain or anxiety. This includes compulsive shopping as a temporary relief, compulsive gambling (driven by the dopamine cycle), or extreme behaviors like workaholism and hoarding.
- Relational Money Disorders (4:58-6:25): These affect interpersonal relationships and include financial infidelity (deceiving a partner about money), financial enabling/dependency (an unhealthy reliance of one person on another), and financial enmeshment (inappropriately involving children in financial stress).
