Like the title says, does a double major/degree really matter? As compared to for example, focusing on one major and getting a 2nd upper/FCH?

Depending on your capabilities and your diligence. If you are good, you can get both degrees FCH. If you are not good academically or are lazy, you can still do badly even if you are just focusing on one degree. The general good thing about DDP is that you will have a wider career option after graduation.

Whether double major/degree put you in advantageous position depends on your desired career's jobscope.
Example, does it require you to know how to manage people/projects, marketing, at the same time your main job is to be the leader in a team of engineers/programmers? In this case, a double major in Business and computing will put you in better position for the job than your single major competitor.

So both the majors have to be able to complement each other.

If you're interested in that particular 2nd major, then go ahead. IMO, there's no added 'prestige' in doing second major. People usually take it our of interest. Its actually not even that hard!! For an NTU HSS student, if you take a second major, the number of AUs you end up clearing goes up by 10 AUs(1 module is usually 3AUs) from 126 to 136. 136 is equivalent to a regular, single major engineering student. The rest of your electives will be devoted towards that second major. So if you are keen on doing it, you have to plan ahead.

So instead of taking a random amalgamation of modules as electives, they just focus on one major and make it their second major. In any case, to even pursue a second major, you have to achieve a GPA 4.0, second uppers in your first year.

If you have a single degree, FCH, ppl will say you li hai.

If you have double or triple degree with all FCH, ppl will say you bu shi ren.

If you have double or triple degree with average results, ppl will say you hardworking.

If you have double or triple degree with poor results, ppl will say you foolish.

End of the day, FCH helps you get better starting pay while double degree increase your job opportunities. Since you can only choose one starting job, would you prefer a higher salary or would you prefer more choices? You decide :)

The reason I kind of regretted studying triple degree right now is because my results is quite average. Given the time I put in to get three average degrees, I would be able to either get a better single degree or graduate earlier. Also, having multiple job offers in completely different industries with average pay is hardly better than having few job offers in a single industry with higher pay.

Do you take a triple major or triple degree program? From my knowledge, the local top 3 uni do not offer a triple degree progam but does offer triple major. No offence but to me, taking a triple degree itself is a foolish decision. You dont need so many back plans, do you? It is much more sensible to use the time to do a masters or phD. Taking a double degree is different, you can take one professional degree and one general degree at the same time so that you can fall back on your general degree if you decided not to enter the professional field your professional degree offers.

Getting FCH in a double degree program is also not a very big deal now la. Around 10% will get it anyway. Getting the LKY gold medal then is something.

From someone taking a double degree program in NTU with FCH GPA... :p

Haha you must be quite lihai then :)

I just feel it is much easier to get a FCH with a single degree. Much more flexibility in playing with the system in terms of going exchange to clear difficult mods, spreading out of mods, etc etc.

Anyway, in case you are wondering, I'm taking double degree with NTU. In addition, I'm also taking ACCA (OBU degree :s13:) externally. Guess that makes it triple degree haha. Graduating from them by this year!! :D

Just wondering, did u regret spending that extra year on double degree? I dunno, but I get very envious of my accounting friends who graduated way ahead of me and earning money and promotion already while I'm still stuck in school....l

Haha, not really lihai la. Just manage my time well in NTU. :) Haha, I am not regretting taking an extra year than my peers since I love both degrees I am studying. Haha, if I have the money, I may take some computing courses externally but not another full degree lo... :p
