to add :

- Eng GPS may not be able to use Map Code / Tel for navigation. For me, my navi is all based on MapCodes.

- Eng GPS do not have Japanese Kanji names of places, cities etc I find having Kanji is somewhat useful eg it is more accurate than translated English spelling

Which parts of Japan are you travelling ? In Fuji & Atami areas, I have encountered some private "highways" that collect tolls in cash only, but cost is not high.

I used ETC card and it was very convenient, however when received the credit card bill one month later, my total toll fees was over 22,000 yen for 6 days. I regret that I didn't took the TEP option. If you intent to travel a lot on highways, best to take TEP package.
I only depend on my iphone google map and it took me everywhere I wanted to go in Kansai area. Osaka - Wakayama - Nara - Kyoto

TEP is cheaper if you know where to use it and if you really travelling over many days at great distance.

For GPS and Navi, google maps still my best guide.

expressway pass, i think it is based on region. previously i used kyushu expressway pass (KEP) and it covers all highways in kyushu. i didnt booked the KEP when I book thru tocoo, but i managed to rent it from Nippon Rent-a-car when i picked up the car. one stretch from oita to fukuoka already 3k+ yen. so it already covers a big chunk of the rental price of 3500 yen.

apart from knowing that you will be driving a lot on highways, one thing to note also is, the price to rent the EP is the same for 1 and 2 days.

I used both the car's English gps and my phone's google map. On the whole relied on google map more often than the car's gps.

I use the japan toll calculator, est the toll i feel it is cheaper. But not sure is it really cover all highway.

I had self drive in japan before mainly central japan, phone network is not stable and google map may not work well.

I'm ok with the menu in jap, but not the voice in jap. so not sure multilingual gps can we select to english voice.
