if u ask me, i suggest you don't waste your time/money for drone courses.

u can easily gain knowledge of drones(from building/modding etc) on the internet.

To become a better pilot, you need to practice, in sim or real life.
no course is going to able to help you achieve that.

if u wanna go commercial and get a CAAS licence eventually, will self taught method be a good approach? has anyone done that before?

No, is not just about piloting the drone, there's more than this, you need to understand the environment, the equipment capability and regulations. All these can't be self taught and most countries need license to operate

Cant be self taught? Maybe for some ppl who dont even bother to google. All this information is widely available online. In sg you don even need radio license like in usa, where their drone pilot are required to own a HAM license. But hey if u got too much money and dunno where to spend by all means go sign up n have someone spoonfeed u the infomation

Wa say spend money to attend course?
I mean what do you wanna achieve?
It’s for those less advanced Drone right? Not for those like DJI kind of drone which is quite smart.

my suggestion would be:

try get a S$120 dji tello and play with it first,
find out how to control/fly a drone
find out if you really like to fly a drone (whether racing or photography)
before try to think too big too complex buying the most expensive drone and attending courses

flying a drone with altitude and position control (tello or spark) is easy

there is also free dji simulator (you need dji remote control, but i have yet trying it)

btw, i don't mind getting some cheap drones from carousell, from users bought on impulse.. :D
