By the way,
Just to OT a little, the section of HDV is a little outdated and could do with some newer features e.g. AVCHD format. Sony's DVD based HiD, HDD based HiD and even JVC HD-7 (can't remember what format the file is)....

Can you clarify these for me:

If there are already firewire ports in your main board, why do you need to buy a video capture card to do video editing? Is a video capture card used to
  • convert analogue audio and video from your analogue camcorder (using RCA phono plugs and Hi8/video8 tapes for instance) to AVI files so that you can edit the video using editing software
  • the capture cards may have hardware codecs which help to accelerate the conversion from AVI to MPEG before writing to the DVD/VCD

Can anyone tell me about the quality of Snazzi video editing cards?

"Video Capture Card" is a very vague term.
It could mean firewire ports. It could mean capturing from Composite Video Signal. Component Video Signal. SDI. VHF/UHF, etc...

Which capture card to get depends on what you are working on.
I'm not able to continue on further explaining until you specifically say so. If you are capturing from MiniDV cameras, then firewire is more than sufficient in most cases.

I used to have a SONY Video 8 camcorder which is now not working so well. But my 8 mm tapes are in a dry chamber and I would like to do some video editing. Many years back I bought the Pinnacle Studio 200 (Linear VE) It sucks and anyway, that technology is obsolete. I also want to get a miniDV camcorder and a new VE solution.

I would probably need the "video capture card" to convert the analogue composite AV signals to AVI. My mainboard already has a firewire port so that should work for my Mini DV recordings.

I'll need to get the Video editing and DVD authoring software to edit my videos and burn them to a VCD/DVD.

The AVI->MPEG2 conversion may use software or hardware CODECs. I think some of these "video capture cards" have built in hardware CODECs to accelerate the conversion or reduce noise. So that's where a "video capture card" becomes good to have.

what is the best video editing software? pinaccle or adobe premiere?

If based on the choice of these two, Adobe.

"Best" depends on definition.
Most NLEs are good in something.

Adobe's 3rd party support and After Effects is second to none. :)

Hi, i tried usin WMM2 to capture and edit some footages. But the final result created by WMM2 is WMV or AVI if i save it to my HDD. So i tried to save it to a cd directly from the program but it cant detect my writer, it keep telling me that my writer is not present. QUOTE]

I got this problem also. Could anyone help me? Is it due to my VCD? How to change from wmv to avi format? I use MS movie maker to transfer from videocam to PC. After that could only save to the PC and thumbdrive but couldn't save into VCD. Kept tellingm e unsuccessful due to different soucre or some source is missing. And why also some VCD can play in the PC but when play in the VCD player, it kept saying no VCD detected? What brand and what type of VCD disc should i buy?

Many thanks.
