Hi all

I will be travelling to Tokyo with my family in Dec and am wondering which of these two area would you guys prefer to stay in?

I am trying to decide on my accommodation for my trip and would appreciate your input.

The listing in Ebisu is near the train station, while the listing in Ikebukuro is nearer to sunshine city, about a good 10 15 mins walk ikebukuro station.

Thank you so much for your help.

To me, there's more shops, eateries etc in Ikebukuro. Whereas Ebisu is rather quiet compared to Ikebukuro, lesser people in general. But proximity to train station may be a plus point if you're travelling with kids.

ikebukuro got red light district. got ***** alot of ramen. got train hub. 4stops to shinjuku

ebisu got beer garden. 1stop to shibuya, 4 to shinjuku.

i've stayed in ikebukuro long term; there's quite a lot to do/see/eat. if you wanna see fujoshi or have a thing for yaoi, otome road near sunshine 60 has plenty.

stayed at my friend's place at ebisu for my last 2 Tokyo trips. Nothing much at ebisu area, but a lot of nice cafes and eateries.

Ikebukuro definitely has more stuff to explore.

ikeubukuro will be better since matsumoto kiyoshi, don-q opens 24hours, more shopping and connections to local train

ebisu wise nothing available (very limited conbini too) at night but pretty happening at the JR west exit for food

Thank you guys for your reply.

Seems like Ikebukuro is a better choice.

The apartment is closer to Sunshine City. From your experience, is it a long walk from Ikebukuro Station? I understand that sunshine city is closer is higashi ikebukuro station.

About 15 min. No direct linkway from the station to Sunshine City.

I prefer Ebisu!!! I think it will be safer especially since you are with family.
Ebisu you can travel quite easily to other parts of tokyo.

I used to sell Japanese property. Property in Ebisu are more "atas" and expensive while Ikebukuro is kind of more shady thus price is lower, not in high demand

Just came back from a 24 days Japan trip last weekend and was staying at a hotel that was located between Otsuka and Ikebukuro (hotel mystays higashi-ikebukuro) and I would definitely say that Ikebukuro is a much better place to stay at compared to Ebisu but do steer clear of the north exit as it's where all the love hotels and red light services are clustered at.

Sunshine city seems rather sparse, a small mall selling mostly lesser known western brands. Is there anything I'm missing? Spent a couple min walking around before leaving

Got a gyoza stadium (a bit meh)
Got a ice cream place with lots of ice cream stalls and also a cup ice 'museum' - lots of weird ice cream flavours like snake, soy sauce, chicken wing, etc
Got an observation deck IIRC
Got a place to eat miracle fruit (coats your tongue with a substance that makes sour food taste sweet)
