Enclosure for 3.5 inch hdd

Hey guys,

I need to extract important data out from my old desktop internal hdd. I went to SLS and bought the Vantec SATA/ IDE to USB 2.0 Adapter but it didn't work on my laptop. Wasted my $. Now I have decided to try using an enclosure, but I am not sure which one should I get. I have attached a photo of my hdd below. Please advice thanks!

Basically, your vantec IDE/sata to USB should be able to do the job. Do not need to buy the enclosure.
Make sure you plugged in additional power supply to the harddisk. I believe vantec comes with that power supply.

When powered up, check if the hdd is spinning well

plugged in already, and waited for 30mins but still cannot detect. I did some research and found out that the supplied power is only enough to power a 2.5inch drive. =\ Which enclosure will work for my drive?

Ya. 3.5" need power supply. My adapter mati liao. Just bought for less than USD6 on eBay.

my hdd does spin when the vantec power supply is connected. its making some sound but my laptop cant detect it.

If the 12v power supply is turned on and the hdd is spinning ( feel it) and it doesn't show detected, it may due to your hdd configuration or faulty parts.

Before comes to the conclusion, right click my computer and choose MANAGE and look for harddisk management. Sometimes, hdd needs to be manually assigned drive letter before usage.

With the usb drive connected and power up, try restart your laptop.

The best is direct connect to motherboard sata port and use utility like Hiren BootCD (Acronis Disk Director) to clone to another working drive.
