1. Encourage procreation within the particular species
2. Not possible until cloning technology is available
3. Next generation will still be able to see the millions of species out there that are not yet extinct. And possibly some new ones that have yet to be discovered.

When we destroy another person's property, it's called vandalism; when we destroy something in nature, it's called progress.

That's the whole problem.

We can throw in money to clone extinct species, or captive breeding, or into conservation efforts, etc. But imo, nothing beats proper education. People need to know now - and not find out when the last piece of arable land is gone and the last river has been poisoned - that we can't eat money.

There are ways to "rescue" endangered species. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kakapo (scroll down to Kakapo recovery plan) for one of the most successful attempts (though it's probably too early to say). Still, there are practical limits to programs like this, and at the rate we're destroying nature, no amount of conservation can keep up.
