Not sure worth to repair and keep as a sparse phone.

Sound like a bloated battery!

Most probably the case of a bloated battery. I'm not sure if Apple is still replacing it so you could try bringing it down.

My brothers iPhone 5 got his battery replaced for free.

Cannot already . It already stated:

The program covers affected iPhone 5 batteries for 3 years after the first retail sale of the unit.

Iphone 5 launch in Sep 2012. So it is more than 3 years liao
