Hands down, Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen for me. Hands down. The plot is just staggeringly intricate and mind blowing.

hey, check out Peter V. Brett's Demon Cycle series. if the plot doesnt keep you hooked, the author's ability to show the good side of every bad guy is mind blowing. reminds you that in every villain's story, they are their biggest hero.

I will recommend The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson. It is now at book 2. The author is real good at writing the fighting scenes and the spells/skills systems are v good as well.

Nice. Thanks for the responses. I have a Sanderson book as he came highly recommended. I've not heard of Peter V. Brett, but I'll look into it.

As for Steven Erikson books, how they are different and how they are staggering is simple. If we think of plots as vertical lines, then most stories only have 1-5 lines weaving downwards, occasionally intersecting. Steven Erikson books have a jumble of more than 10 lines that jumble wildly and drive you insane. I strongly recommend his books!

Totally agree with the Malazan Book of the Fallen. It is for more experienced High Fantasy readers that can appreciate the intricacy and non-conventional approach of Steven Erikson.
