I am planning to purchase all in One printer for home use. Typically 25 pages per week for kids home work.

Considering EPSON L550 or L555.

Anyone used before? How is the reliability?

Thanks

Get a laser if budget allows. So ink wont dry out and require servicing.

And if die die want to get epson, dun get extended warranty from courts/HN/Best. Get it from Epson itself.
Mine under courts extended warranty cannot claim a single cent when print head clogged. Whereas epson covers that.

Thanks. If I buy Laser printer, is the toner expensive? I understand epson ink cost only $9 for a bottle. how about laser?

Toner don't dry up like ink. More economy to use laser printer if no color is required.

In term of reliability of laser printer based on my own experience, my vote goes to Brother.

I find that Epson's printer head do not last long. My previous Epson AIO went uplorry within 2 years (and reparation cost more than half the printer price ). Though i have to say their DuraBrite ink is really top-notch and waterproofing

Replaced with HP AIO thereafter, and it is celebrating its 9yo this year and still counting.

Laser toner >>> traditional ink cartridge for me

Have a basic 2-yr old b&w fuji xerox laser for printing occasional documents, still on stock toner. No more of those "damn I just hadn't used it for 2 months and the bloody ink has dried up"

FYI, I've had a Epson MX14 (B/W laser AIO) running for the past 3 years, still on the stock toner cartridge (approx 800+ pages so far). Zero maintenance required so far.

Original toner around $50+
3rd party toner around $18+

The page yield claims for the Epson L550 or L555 are impressive, but note that it's based on continuous printing. This means it definitely doesn't include the amount of ink spent on cleaning cycles (whether manual or automatic).

This is a necessary evil of inkjets in order to prevent clogging. I'm not familiar with Epson's system, but with Canon inkjets (I have two), it's based on set interval between prints. E.g., If there's X hours between printing, it will automatically trigger a cleaning cycle the next time you set a print.

After installation, the print quality is not good. How can I improve the print quality and fix the situation?
Please use the printer driver to print out the nozzle check pattern. If there are missing lines in the pattern, it is recommended to run the head cleaning function. If the symptoms still persist after
running the head cleaning twice, it is advised to run the Power Ink Flushing once to see if quality improves.

This function consumes a lot of ink. Before using this function, make sure there is enough ink in the ink tanks. If there is not enough ink, please refill the ink tanks.

I'm not sure about latest models anymore but for previous models, if one cartridge has run out of ink (say cyan), you won't be able to print anymore, even if it's black and white. Do enquire that properly before you purchase

Which is why I'm a convert to laser. As long as the toner hasn't run out, it's just plug & print without having to worry about the ink condition if you had stored it for quite some time

I rather go for laser. Very lasting and wont dry up.

And i will go for Canon and any brands that comes with all the drum and cartridge in one. At least the drum unit wont spoil unlike some brands have drum unit separated. Which can last at most 30k prints and thats it.

Ink cart very expensive. The cost per print is expensive especially when you print a lot.

Thanks for all suggestions. Epson will cost in IT show around $300. It is AiO. Let me shop for laser AiO if is around that price I will consider AiO.

I print less colour. But Once in a while I do Colour printing.

My Existing HP officejet printer 4610 is is just two years old. Now Jam at ink station. Open and saw there is lots of ink on the side where the ink is parked. Looks like HP printers are vomiting ink.

I suppose your EPSON you refer is more that 9 years back. Current EPSON printers I am not sure how reliable

depends on your usage, a coloured laser printer might be cost effective.

I've had my epson t50 with me for the last 4yearsbefore it died. replaced it with the new epson l800 with external ink. really a great printer.

I bought an AIO epson l210 for personal office use as i work in a place where if i need to print i have to go out of office and collect it. hence, my usage is quite heavy. bought in early january and ink is at 1/4 left after heavy usage ie photocopying, printing etc.

if you print often, ink wont clog. i make it a habit to print a coloured document every week to keep ink moving on both my brother AIO and epson L800 printer at home. office one no need to say.. everyday also print....

my regret is that i should have bought a better AIO .. your l550 model is a good choice... l555 is with Wifi.. i should have bought l555 if budget had permitted lol... but its still a worthy investment
