anybody tried replacing nylon strings on a steel string acoustic guitar?

not recommended. not recommended at all. there's an opportunity cost to it. if you have some time like an hour or so, go through this post. it's very detailed. the cost is, strings have their tension while the neck/bridge has its own. to summarize it, each guitar build has one set of strings that's the perfect match for it. if the neck isn't stiff and the strings are heavy, they'll mess the action up. this could work other way too.

It can be done lah.

On folk guitars with metal strings, the tension of the strings would had been counter-act by the truss rod.

But if you place low tension nylon strings, you only need to set back the truss rod to set the correct action on the frets

Don't fret about it if you don't know what is truss rod and how to adjust, its very simple. Youtube plenty of examples.

BUT, a classical guitar with Nylon strings cannot have metal strings because classical guitar has NO TRUSS ROD.

Don't do it!
I have done it on my first guitar 2 weeks after I started playing and it just mash up the bridge...not nice. need truss rod for that
