It is nice to be there, but how often do you use it?
I wanted to get a hard drive with firewire port such that I can free up a USB port for others but its expensive to get a exclusive extension with firewire port

Do you think its worth the money?

the worth of anything is has so many variables. Allow me to highlight some.

usage patterns
- are you gonna be using it extensively?

necessity
- do you really need it? can you make do with other options?

future proof
- apple has sort of killed fw in favour of their new thunderbolt.

In light of that, stardom has a few dual bay fw casings that might go for cheap right now. Or you could just get a powered usb hub for extra connections. I got myself 2 of these and according to my usage and needs, it was worth every penny.

I would recommend you to get USB 3.0 instead.
As incubus mentioned, Apple is sort of killing FW.

I believe FW usage would be as much as USB. FW enclosure with USB for internal 2.5 hdd would be fine, isn't it?

errrr, why do you need other people's opinion to help you justify a purchase with usage frequencies that only you yourself can dictate?

Is this a need or a want? :s22:

If you intend to replace that laptop in the future, I suggest you get the USB since Apple is no longer producing FW in new releases

You can just buy a WD HDD with FW connection. Although Apple is slowly phasing out FW, by the time you replace your comp with one that has no FW, that HDD prob has died by then.

FW is alright for an older Mac since it doesn't have USB3.0. I use a FW HDD for full backup of my system (clone). Faster than USB 2.0. :)

If you have a newer Mac though, it's probably not worth the extra cost, less compatibility and more difficult cable management (it's thick and not easy to bend).
