I have a video file in MP4 format which I need to edit. Basically just need to remove the advertisements from it. Can anyone recommend any free video editing software for Mac? Thanks!

iMovie is easy enough and free.

how do you intend to remove the ad? blurring it? if it's on the corner end, you can try cropping the edges

Recorded a TV series and as usual tons of ads in between. Intend to remove all the ads so I can watch in peace.

Lightworks has a free verison. You can download it to try.
Thanks but trials normally have restrictions right? I know some will stick a watermark on the video while others only allow you to edit for just a few minutes.

QuickTime Player would do then. Load the file, split the clips and delete the unwanted portions accordingly.

QT didn't quite work. It only allows me to select the start and end point and it removes everything outside the selection. Useful for changing the starting and ending point but not for multiple cuts.

Had better luck with iMovie though I must say its a real lengthy process. Import the video. Delete portions you select. Create new project. Drag all the separate clips to the project. Select all the clips. Share as movie file then export.

Sheesh! Why couldn't they make it simple i.e. import the video, delete the parts and then SAVE! Viola. :s22::s13:

You can do it slightly easier with iMovie and it's also possible to do it with quicktime.

iMovie
1. Import clip
2. create new movie project
3. add whole clip to movie
4. cut sections within the movie project
5. save and export your project

Quicktime: QuickTime Player 10.x: Rearrange your movie

- The trick on using quicktime is splitting your movie instead of using trim(only beginning & end).
- Say there's only 1 advertisement in your movie, you should split it into 3 sections.
- In the same Split window you can select the advertisement and hit delete button on keyboard to remove that section and save it.

This is what I did with QT player:

(1) Load the file and play the video
(2) Drag the playhead marker to the start of advertisement
(3) From Edit menu, "Split clip". Now you should have two clips.
(4) In the 2nd clip, drag the playhead till the end of the advertisements.
(5) "Split clip" again. There are now 3 clips. The middle one contains only the ads. Select that clip and delete.
(6) Repeat accordingly.

You may have used "trim", instead of "split clip".
