haven't been to onsen in fukuoka as i self drive around. there are plenty of small family own onsen around kyushu which can be located via rental car gps

When we plan trip for clients (average stay is 1 week, mostly self-drive) we only put them Fukuoka city for one night, final night, unless we have special request to stay longer in the city. Most of our clients come Kyushu to experience nature, countryside, traditional Japan, ryokan, they already visited Tokyo, Osaka before. Best onsen are away from Fukuoka city in Oita, Kumamoto, Saga. That's my opinion anyway ...

I spent 7 days there.
Went to Kumamoto as well.
Also Mojiko, Beppu, Yufuin (love the onsen there- many onsen hotels to choose from).

Presently SQ direct flight there is so expensive!

Most of them these days on Agoda etc so can try searching there (though booking OTA don't usually get same choice of rooms or meal plan if booking direct)
