Fullerton Hotel S'pore confirms 'Friends of Israel' gala dinner won't be held there amid backlash

An earlier version of the event's post listed The Fullerton Hotel as its host.

An upcoming "Friends of Israel Annual Aliyah Gala Dinner" has sparked significant online backlash after it was found that the event was to be held in Singapore's Fullerton Hotel on Nov. 18 this year.

A now-deleted version of the event's sign up page on its organiser's website listed the five-star hotel as its venue, alongside a payment section that can only be completed with a Singapore banking app.

As of midday on Oct. 13, the event's venue has since been taken down and left unknown.

The sign up page still includes the same date and timing and the payment via a Singapore banking app, but with no confirmed location.

Host

The gala dinner is organised by Keren Hayesod, an Israel-based, government-linked fundraising organisation that has global offices, including in Asia.

According to its Facebook page, the organisation had previously held events in Singapore before the outbreak of the Gaza conflict in 2023, including conferences from as early as 2010.

Backlash

This year's gala dinner drew significant attention among Singaporeans for its choice of location against a backdrop of ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip, and most notably, a United Nations commission of inquiry that concluded in a report that Israel is committing genocidal actions against Palestinians in Gaza.

Netizens took to social media to voice their displeasure over what they perceived as The Fullerton Hotel's "endorsement" of Israel's actions in Gaza, and many called for the event's cancellation.

"By hosting this event, The Fullerton Hotel risks being perceived as endorsing or normalising the policies and conduct currently under international legal scrutiny," one Instagram user said in a post.

Email threads have also circulated calling for signatures against the hotel's hosting of the event, calling the hosting of the event "tone-deaf" and "morally indefensible."

A check on Fullerton Hotel's Google Reviews page showed a number of 1-star reviews from supposed guests, who left their reasons for giving such reviews blank.

Fullerton Hotel will not be hosting event

When Mothership reached out to The Fullerton Hotel, a spokesperson said the event will not be held on their premises, as confirmed by Keren Hayesod.

"We wish to clarify that The Fullerton Hotel Singapore is not a sponsor, organiser, or partner of the upcoming Friends of Israel Annual Aliyah Gala Dinner," the spokesperson affirmed.

"We do not endorse, support, or take a position on the views or objectives of independent organisers or their guests.

Our priority remains to maintain a respectful, inclusive, and safe environment for all guests, partners, and members of the public," they added.

Mothership has also reached out to Keren Hayesod for comment.

Personally I think there should be no issue with having the gala dinner

But it might be a cover for fund raising or things might get out of control.

So personally, I think there is no issue with the dinner being held there but I am also ok with them cancelling the dinner because of the above reasons that it might be a cover for fund raising or things might get out of control.

The Israeli embassy or a synagogue might be a better venue

Why nobody pro Israel?
I’m pro Israel, having been there. But it doesn’t mean that it’s “Israel first and always” for me. Sometimes it makes mistakes. Sometimes I think it’s full of crap. Sometimes I think some activities it’s ok if it’s cancelled cos first and foremost, I am Singaporean

Yes. Probably more towards banking and financial institution which are now backing tech, AI and data centres.

BlackRock & Friends want in.... Lockheed & Friends have to find somewhere else to play.

This is what we call 白眼狼 (ungrateful wolf)
When you had just gained independence and were struggling to defend yourself

ppl helped design your armed force structure from scratch, modeled after their own armed force;
ppl guided the creation of your conscription policy;
ppl helped set up the training institute to train your first batch of local officers;
ppl developed operational doctrines suited for a small, high-readiness defence force;
ppl advised on early equipment purchases and logistics;
ppl even sent military trainers to teach your recruits how to hold a rifle for the first time —

When you are in desperate need for help, ppl were there for you.
And now, ppl can’t even use a hotel in your country to host a dinner.
