Gaming Laptop Lagging

Hey guys,
I have a mid-range gaming laptop with pretty good specs, but when playing games like Need For Speed: Most Wanted 2012 at medium graphic settings, it starts to lag. Any ideas on how to solve this? I have updated all drivers and frequently defrag and clean out my HDD.

Laptop model: Lenovo Y480
Processor: 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7-3610QM
RAM: 8 GB DDR3 PC3-12800 @ 1600 MHz
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M LE with 2 GB GDDR5 SDRAM
Storage Drive: 750 GB Serial ATA-300 @ 5400 RPM

Have check the temp for the CPU and GPU? If the temps run high, likely it will cause either or both to start throttling. This will def cause lag in games.

On a sidenote, is the GT 640M LE running on GDDR5? Try lowering ur settings a little to see of it still lags. The LE version shld run on DDR3 if I am not wrong.

Mine is GDDR5. Lowering didn't help. However, restarting the game thrice will eliminate lag. Any suggestions to maximize performance? I'm sure my computer is capable of it, just that I've no idea if any software is needed or is my HDD too slow. As for temperatures, it does run quite high when I play the game.
