My child is in Kindergarten. I wanted to let him go back to school this morning when my fatherin-law (we live with our parents) say that COVID-19 is still dangerous and an unknown factor. He also said that we should not let the child go back to school and just teach him at home (since I am currently not working). Even adult WFH, why let the child go out.

I would like to hear your opinions on this issue. Send the child to school or keep him at home.

ps: my parent-in-laws are all 70+ year old already. Is there fear of him bringing back COVID-19?

I'm delaying a week first to see how it goes. (I have a kid in N2 and the other is a year old)

Some things you have to consider:
1) Younger kids aren't so careful in looking after themselves (wearing of mask, washing of hands, etc)
2) The effects of the disease is long term if your child gets infected
3) Your child will be alone in the hospital with no visiting allowed if he/she gets infected. Can he/she cope?
4) Are you able to teach him/her at home?
5) Are there any other people at home at risk (e.g. elderly, babies) if your child gets infected?

Not even 1 parent/relative can stay with child?

I guess so? Think about it, the probability of a parent's presence to allow the child to recover faster is lower than that of the parent getting infected so I don't think they will want a new patient to look after if there's already a child patient to deal with

It's a question of risk vs rewards.

What does a child get if he/she goes back to school?
+ continued education and social interaction
+ back to normal life except have to wear mask and wash hands more often
- will engage with more people, easily hundreds of other kids and staff
- increased risk of getting the virus, plus bringing it home (dangerous if you have elders)

What if the child stays at home instead:
+ Less risk of getting the virus, and bringing virus home to family members
+ Less daily worry for parents
- disruption to normal education and social interaction (need HBL or alternative)
- depends on level, may harm child's ranking in class (if it applies)

It's a delicate balance, important to discuss among parents and family members.
