Following the web redesign and other changes, Google is introducing a new prompt bar for the Gemini app on Android and iOS.

Gemini is going from a pill-shaped text field to a rounded rectangle (even before you enter text). Underneath the “Ask Gemini” field, you get a row of actions, starting with the ‘plus’ menu that’s now much shorter. You just get Camera, Gallery, Files, and Drive in this bottom sheet.

Next up are pill-shaped buttons for “Research” and “Canvas.” Tap the three-dot icon in a circle to see those items in list form with brief descriptions, as well as “Video” (Veo 2 generation). Chips will stay highlighted upon tap.
  • Deep Research: Get in-depth reports
  • Canvas: Create docs and code
  • Video: Generate with Veo
L-R: Old, new, and mobile web

If you open the model picker, Google has removed Deep Research and Veo 2 (for Advanced subscribers). They are better thought of as Gemini capabilities than general-purpose models, with the new chips having the benefit of being always visible. As such, the menu is now down to four models:

  • 2.0 Flash: Fast all-around help
  • 2.5 Flash (preview): Our next reasoning model built for speed
  • 2.5 Pro (preview): Reasoning, math & code
  • Personalization (preview): Based on your Search history
The voice input microphone and Gemini Live button round out this prompt bar redesign. Overall, it’s not as minimalist as before, but allows Google to introduce more features and matches the web UI.

As first seen on gemini.google.com, Google is being more explicit about what Gemini can do. We’re seeing this prompt bar redesign on Gemini for Android with the latest Google app beta. It’s not yet in the stable channel.

Update: It’s also rolling out to the Gemini app for iPhone and iPad. Google is using this redesign to switch to standard iOS menus.

In recent days, Google AI Pro subscribers noticed lower query limits for 2.5 Pro in the Gemini app. That has now been doubled, with Google now specifying what the limits actually are.

Historically, Google has not shared the specific number of daily prompts that paid users can send to Gemini’s advanced models before they are capped. As of I/O 2025, when the rebranded AI Pro and new AI Ultra plans were introduced, the company just said users paying $19.99 per month get “Expanded access” (versus “Limited access” on the free tier) to 2.5 Pro (preview), while it’s the “Highest access” when you pay $249.99/month.

In general, most people — save for the heaviest of users — don’t hit that restriction.

Earlier this week, Google appeared to lower the limit, with many more heavy users — especially coders that might go back-and-forth with Gemini — hitting that wall. When that happens, they have to wait for the cap to reset, switch to 2.5 Flash, or upgrade to Google AI Ultra.

Gemini chief Josh Woodward today acknowledged user complaints about the limit. There was no explicit acknowledgement about this week’s change or why it was lowered (though Google continues to say that it sees “massive demand for Gemini 2.5”), but we learned that the just imposed limit was 50 queries per day.

Google has now doubled the 2.5 Pro limit to 100 queries per day for the Gemini app in response to users “wanting more.”

9to5Google’s Take

I don’t think most casual users of the Gemini app will hit the limit unless they’re working on a specific project that benefits from 2.5 Pro’s “Reasoning, math & code” capabilities. Arguably, most queries can be addressed by the faster 2.5 Flash model, which became generally available in the Gemini app at I/O. Meanwhile, those that want the old experience likely have to subscribe to Google AI Ultra.
