Remember last May, when a video leak of explicit Instagram DMs between Ian Fang and Carrie Wong made headlines for weeks? While Singapore has since moved on from the scandal, it's still the elephant in the room when it comes to the young stars, who both declared that they would no longer comment on the matter after lodging*police reports.**
It seems like enough time has passed — 15 months, to be exact —*as Carrie opened up (well, at least as much as*she allowed herself to) about the scandal on the latest episode*of*Quan Yifeng’s talk show Hear U Out. The 26-year-old actress, who can now be seen in Mediacorp drama*A Quest To Heal,*broke down a number of times while talking about the reputation-damaging incident, which also involved Ian's rumoured girlfriend Rebecca Lim and Carrie's boyfriend Boris Lin, though there was no mention of them or Ian during her chat with Yifeng. (Yes, even when Carrie was asked about the current status of her love life.)
It all started when Quan Yifeng broached the topic of*Carrie "experiencing one of [her] biggest scandals last year". The actress then said, with tears welling up in her eyes,*“Everyone in Singapore knew*what happened. I think that the most important thing is to face it. You can only move on*if you confront the issue, so... it's not easy.”
Carrie broke down a number of time while talking about the scandal
Carrie said she will never forget the*day the news broke, which was on May 14, because it was also her mother’s birthday. She was filming in Indonesia when the leak happened and so all she could do was to message her parents to warn them about what was about to happen. “I sent a text to my mum and told her that she would see something about me in the news the next day. I told my parents that it wasn’t a big deal, and that it would pass quickly. I told them not to worry too much about me, and apologised to my mother as I wished her a happy birthday.”
She said she*was most worried about her parents. "I always share good news with them and keep bad news to myself. But when this incident happened, they would find out about it whether or not I told them about it.”
“There was nothing I could do in that situation," an increasingly emotional Carrie continued. "I did wrong and I knew that I needed to shoulder some responsibility as well, so I needed to face up to it. I was fine with everyone saying things about me, but not when they said things about my parents (…) you know netizens have no mercy with their words.”

After she returned to Singapore, she distanced herself from her parents as she didn’t know how to face them. She would spend hours at a friend's*place in the hopes that her folks would be asleep by the time she got home. Alas, she would often return to her father waiting for her in the living room.
“He would switch off the lights and head for bed once I got home,” Carrie shared. “They never asked me about it. Not even once. This is what I’m most grateful to my parents about. They know I didn’t want to talk about it, which is why they didn’t ask. I know that this must have*hurt them more than it hurt me (…) When the news blew up, their friends would definitely have asked them about it, and I’m sure that my parents were suffering in a way that I didn't know about.”
She said*it was a difficult*period for her.*"I didn’t want to leave my house and just locked myself in my room all day without eating or*drinking.*I wanted to sleep all the time because you get to escape the world through sleep. I like that," the actress said. "When I first got back to work,*it was like I had to go back to facing people again. It felt terrible because I*knew that everyone knew about what happened."
The silver lining of the whole incident, the actress said, is that she now knows who her true friends are. “There were some people who chose to say things about me*at certain public events. Their words*hurt me [...] As I look back at the incident, I thought maybe some friendships were meant to be short-lived," she said. "[At*the same time], when I went to the police station to give my statement, my friend [from secondary school] sat outside waiting for me until I finished at 3am.”
