Hi, I just got this problem with my GPU since yesterday. When I play my games every few second the fps would dip very low (<5fps) for a while and will only go back the usual ~35fps for a short while, so I thought the problem had something to do with the GPU temp so I decided to monitor it. To my surprise even after I've closed my games and applications and let the computer stay idle for half and hour the GPU temperature still didn't go down at all (~80C). So I shut down my computer and let it cool down completely and turn it on, without opening any programs except for the temp monitor. The GPU temp went from 45C to 80C again even though I didn't open anything. I put my hand near the exhaust fan and it was still blowing very hot air as usual. I also updated the GPU driver to the latest version. Does someone know what went wrong with the GPU? I'm using GTX460M on an Asus G53

try switch to Intel HD graphics and see if it is still the case? If it is, is the laptop still under warranty? Send for RMA. Or if u dare, flush everything and reformat see if it solves the case.

I am having idle temps of 70C+ on my laptop after reapplying thermal paste and having a cooler underneath it, 6770M. (room temp 30C-35C)

I guess 80C might be cause of your environment, dried up paste, no cooler? You could contact ASUS if you may still have your warranty to take a look or so OR an expert giving you his opinion to fix it or so.

i had this problem with my old acer laptop, to the extent most of the time it auto shut off. Then i bring to acer they never do much... they only help clear the dust inside or something, then okay liao eh! Im thinking it might be dust clogging up your exhaust fans in your laptop?? :s11:

Your temps are definitely not normal, most likely either your GPU or CPU or even both are not idling properly.

Check your idle clocks and voltage of both CPU and GPU, if either or both are not idling properly could be either buggy drivers, tio resource hogging virus or heatsink not mounted properly or thermal paste never apply correctly.

As a reference, my quad core i7-2670QM idles at 40-50 degrees with web surfing and the 7690m XT at 30+ degrees.

If you need help with fixing your abnormal temps I could take a look at it :)

Your problem could be due to thermal paste dried up or too much of it, heatsink clogged with dust, heatsink not mounted properly in the first place.

Most likely is thermal paste dried up or heatsink clogged.

Thanks guys. I realized the problem is with the CPU too, when the game stutters and I alt tab to task manager the CPU usage would be 99%~100%, even though no other programs are open. I'm suspecting the problem is with the thermal paste as the airflow temperature (wherever that's supposed to be) is only 45C while the CPU and GPU are in the 80s. I did a virus scan and did find a bunch of viruses lurking around but it didn't solve the problem. I no longer have warranty for my laptop so I'm not sure where to bring my laptop to have it looked at

Just did a few more scans of my computer. I think I already got all the virus. Temp still doesn't go down yet. Anyone has any suggestion of where I should bring my comp to get it cleaned up and reapply the thermal paste?

Either the thermal grease dried up or fan choke with dust or both.
