GPU? which GPU?

I was wondering. I know the GPU core chip itself is from amd or nvidia themselves. And all AIB GPU is using the same chip from nvidia or amd themselves. But I was wondering if different AIB board GPU for example msi, power color, sapphire is using a different PCB with different quality capacitor. Or maybe different components on the PCB itself. In that case will it affect the GPU lifespan? Maybe some using better capacitor some using bad ones it could affect gpu lifespan no?

If they are using different quality components, like different quality capacitor then different brand gpu will have different lifespan. Bought an unknown brand call Eagle 8600 GTS long ago and it dies only after 2 years. So was wondering if the component they use on the PCB itself is lousy.

If all PCB component use is the same then gpu brands from china like colorful radeon RX 570 should be able to last 5 years also if taken good care of.

each brand uses different pcb,capacitor and etc. the pcb design normally follow as the reference card but still different in some ways due to individual brand's ideal designing concept. basically all uses same gpu core.

best to not judge all gpu of same brand and model has identical lifespan, unless theres a manufacturer error( thermal pad placement etc)

maybe u want to watch more video on gpu tear-down. its kinda important when choosing which brand/model to buy, thats how i choose mine these days. especially prices for the decent cards are steep.

most brands are quite safe in the market, if not easily blacklisted already thats why theres no one brand thats really blacklisted, unless individual's experience.

Does mining have a negative effect on a GPU? Or is it mostly because they are used 24/7?

Mining GPUs are okay if properly used. The only thing is that the fans will die faster because they're running 24/7, but you can buy new fans to replace them from places like aliexpress/amazon or you could try email the distros to see if they sell extra fans. Some ppl just ziptie new fans to the heatsink.

Also if it's an AMD card, the BIOS has probably been flashed to a mining BIOS so you need to flash it back to the original BIOS if the seller didn't do it for you.


Miners undervolt their card to lower electricity costs compared to gamers who overclock (and overvolt) their cards for performance, and mining cards are running at a constant temperature so they are usually in better condition than gaming cards because they're not exposed to repeated hot/cold thermal cycles.


Basically if you are buying a mining card from someone who has any inkling of what they're doing, it's safe.

But sometimes there are people who don't know what they are doing at all (usually old uncles who hear from ppl it's profitable then follow to do when they are IT-illiterate), never undervolt when mining their cards. Yes there are these kind of people who don't know anything about their investments and just jump in, full 3 months never mine optimally also don't know one. The kind of ppl that are oblivious to their investment portfolio bleeding money because they jump in without knowledge. Then the kind of environment they run in also, oxidation and rust.

I have purchased mining cards before, perfect condition just dusty (some miners may be willing to help you clean them before you come to collect).

Expect the mining cards to be choked full of dust on the fans and heatsink. Use compressed air to clean them and you'll be fine. Alternatively if the card no more warranty, just disassemble it to clean easier then you can also replace the thermal paste while you're at it too.

Check for corrosion/rust and melted caps or burned pcbs, this is what you should check when buying second hand graphic cards whether it's a gaming or mining card.
