GTX 970 & New Build.

Hello to All Gurus,

I need your inputs.
Currently doing a mini project to re-customize my PC.
I am planning to get Fractal Design R5 from Lazada later.

Now deciding which GTX 970 is value for money (Considering the 15% Citibank Discount):
Palit GeForce GTX 970 JetStream 4GB DDR5 PCI-E - $479
ASUS STRIX GTX970 4GB DDR5 OC - $569
MSI GTX970 4GD5T OC - $509

I've been using Powercolor Myst+ 7870 (Idle at 53 C) and thinking for an upgrade, never tried Nvida before so i thought of taking the leap.
I realize all my AMD cards are freaking heat generators and my room is already hot, so thinking of NVIDIA to see if it makes any difference.
No Air-Con

I don't mind if you suggest another card if its good $500 range please.
Oh also what kind of good silent fan should i get for my new casing?

Things to Note:
I am using dual-monitor, 1920x1080 resolution each.
Using HP Z620 Workstation till i setup this new silent gaming rig.

If 7870 myst is hot for you, then either any of the cards for the gtx970 variant will make any differences.

7870 myst on full load is only a mere 6Xdeg - 7X deg. Tested with my gf's dad pc that i build back in early 2014. And was build without a exhaust fan.


The cards you KIV-ed operates between 6Xdeg - high 7Xdeg range.

Highly most likely is your poor ventilated room. Do note that air is a bad conductor of heat. And to have 7870 myst heated up your room is near impossible.

It could be your GPU thermal paste had dried up, might wanna try asking the service centre if they can reapply it for you.

Idle also should not be at 53deg. Should be at 4x range.

Thanks royfrosty for your inputs. You are right, my room is indeed poorly ventilated *sigh*. And for my 7870 i think its a mixture of HP Z620 casing and thermal paste dried up. Hence why i'm ordering the Fractal Design to have a better air flow, and to reuse my previous setup Intel Core i7 930 + Gigabyte X58A-UD3R till i slowly get my new rig up.

@ondooy, for the MSI do you have any idea if it still silent when at 80% load? i'm looking for reviews but so far only Gaming edition were mentioned.

Think is becos of his case ?

Any gpu @ 80% load fan will start kicking in, the good thing is with R5 it has noise dampening on the side panels

No problem with noise @ all even they are working @ high performance

80% most gpu will start to be audible. Just a matter of how audible it is.

For fans that are dead silent you probably need msi gaming edition and asus strix.

Do also note that they do not spin the fans so long as it stays below 60deg. It will only move if it hits 60deg and above.

Looks like i'll try out MSI GTX970 4GD5T OC since R5 has Noise dampening.

It's been a while since i got this excited setting up new computer haha...
