If you're talking about Raffles Place area, then you're full of choices.

True Fitness (cheap, and 2 branches in that area; Suntec, Vivo branch also within CBD, and hv access to True Yoga at RF and Orchard)
California Fitness (cheap; Orchard br also in CBD)

Fitness First (less cheap, but that RF area already got 2-3 branches, has small swimming pool)

Boutique Gym at boat Quay (forgot the name, own by top local BBr Augustine and top local female BBr) - not so cheap

Suggest you take the trial at various gym to experience for yourself.
Warning - You'll be applied many hard-sell pressure, like 'offer only valid today', etc. Hold your horse, be firmed! :)

Hey TS...just to add on to ketua's reply.

True Fitness - there is 1 at Chevron House, 1 at China Square Central in the CBD, in town will be Suntec & Great World City.
Price will be cheap and there is usually a contract of 2-3 years.
Their biggest branch is Suntec.

Cali Fitness - 1 at Republic for CBD, in town will Orchard (next to Cineleisure). There's one in Bugis also (if you consider that as CBD or town)
Price will be cheap and there is usually a contract of 2-3 years.
Their biggest branch is Orchard.

Fitness First - there are 4 in CBD (Capital Town, One Raffles Quay, OUB Centre & One George Street - some have swimming pools), there are 2 in town (Paragon & the Cathay)
Their biggest branch is Fusionopolis. (this one has a big swimming pool so if you are staying in the west, this will be good)
Price is not cheap like TF or CF but there is no contract tied-up.

Just walk in for a trial or look-see for all these branches and decide for yourself.
Like what ketua has mentioned, dont give in to the hard-selling pressure. :D

thanks a mill monk and ketua. whats with the 2-3 years contract? you mean i have to sign a contract for this duration upfront and agree to pay $1k+++ a year for gym?

do you have any idea how much im looking at for a deal at california and truefitness?

please pardon my ignorance. ive been enjoying the usage of the gyms at my NS workplace and school, gyms that are really quite awesome. no one to compete with for dumbbells and new equipment. so im really quite new when it comes to the realm of fee-charging gyms.

These commercial gyms usually have a contract like 1,2 or 3 years. The longer the contract, the lesser the monthly fees. You dont have to pay upfront the full amount, it's usually deducted monthly from credit card or giro. (dont know if giro is applicable but should be)
I paid $68/mth for TrueFitness last time for a 3 years contract, not too sure what they are chargin now but could be around $60-80 per month for both California & True??
Maybe someone who is a member there now could advise.:s7:

what I would suggest is to go down to the actual gym and try it out. Most have at least a one week free pass for you to try it out.

You then get an idea of the crowd, the ambiance, the facilities. Make sure you go at the times you will typically use the gym as off-peak hour experience is very different from peak-hour.

My experience with Fitnessfirst is that UOB building facilities are terrible, One Raffles Quay and George Street branches are small but decent. Haven't tried the one at Millenia Walk or Paragon but heard good things although these two branches don't have swimming pools.

TrueFitness Suntec is nice and spacious, but they share the pool with a university club so most times its crowded. Also significantly cheaper than fitness first but fewer branches at least in the CBD. The vivocity branch is terrible. Can't comment on the other sites as I haven't tried them yet.

I would try to stick to shorter contracts as you never know when an injury or commitment might flag. Sometimes working out has to take a back seat to family or career. Also, clubs can get sold, closed down, facilities may deteriorate etc... Saving $10 a month but giving up all autonomy may be more costly in the long run.

Lastly, the sales consultants will try to pressure you to sign on the first time you enter their gym with a "only today" offer or some other crap like that. Get a feel for the different gyms, fob them off with a I need to think about it. Its amazing how the "only today" offers can keep on being extended.
