Hi, quick question here.

Would it be better to go for a H77 if i am not overclocking or sli/crossfire the system since H77 and Z77 are basically the same, except Z77 has more options for overclocking?

Thanks in advance

If not overclocking, H77 will suit you just fine. Some H77 boards support xfire. If under tight budget, can consider B75 boards as well.

Would overclocking CPU require purchase of special cooling (e.g. heatsinks/fans/watercoolers)?

Or stock cooling is good enough?

that depends on how much you want to OC, but i would recommend you to get a decent air cooler should you want to OC.

One question. Sorry to barge in.
Antec kuhler 620 vs 920. Which one should i get. Is the $50 difference worth the features?

the 920 has a few key differences;

1) thicker radiator
2) fan speed control
3) adjustable LED

if you value these features then i say go for the 920.

I used to do a bit of overclocking in my "younger" days. But since age caught up, I kinda got sian about the whole tweaking affair to get the right clock speed, etc.

My current rig, which I've been using for almost 5 yrs now, was not overclocked at all even though I did want to do it when I first bought it.

So now that I'm going to upgrade, I'm hesitant. I heard the rig to get should be Z77 mobo + 3570K CPU, if I wanna o/c. But if I don't, do you think it's advisable to just go with H77 mobo + 3570 CPU? Or what CPU is the sweet spot for a H77 board?

bed to differ on this.

z77 board is significantly more expensive tham h77 with little difference in features.
most users will not benefits from z77 at all.

from price point of view B75 or h77 offer much better bang for.buck.

i think most users will be more than happy with B75 or H77. no point paying a huge premium for insignificant gain in performance at all

If not overclocking, go for h77 or b75 not worth the $ plus the process of overclocking itself requires you to have a better cooler. That itself would cost additional.

Over the years overclocking process have significantly changed, its very easy to OC your rig if you have the temperature under control.
Most z77 boards even come with their own tweak features to OC for you out of the box.

TS the best bet for you would be to state your price and usages of your rig and let the bros here suggest for you accordingly.

Intel i5 3470 + a B75 Mobo would suggest something like this for non-oc build.

Overclocking nowadays have lost the meaning it used to have.

The marginal improvement simply does not justify the spending in economic terms. Most of the time, users are better off spending a little more to get a speed grade bump on the cpu which is guaranteed, versus spending the money on exortic cooling which does not guarantee a significant speed bump & risk pushing the system beyond stability.

I did overclock before... but not after the economic returns no longer justify.

agree. Hardly any risk involved and results are more or less guaranteed.

actually I'd recommend an aftermarket cooler for people who don't overclock (like me) to reduce noise because the stock cooler can get quite noisy

Digging back this thread as I not going for Haswell.

No OC, no gaming. Just photo editing, fast performance and storage blocks.

Now I am still using P35 chipset on C2D. Running well 5yrs + but I just felt like its time.

I have 1 SSD (OS) 1 SSD (cache) 4 HDD running in pair on (0+1). I want storage protection on my videos and pics.

I guess H77 has a limit on 6 SATA while Z77 has up to 8 SATA,

ASRock Z77 w/
2 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s connectors by Intel® Z77,
4 x SATA3 6.0 Gb/s connectors by ASMedia,
4 x SATA2 3.0 Gb/s connectors by Intel® Z77

Seriously I do not know if should get H77 + RAID card or settle on Z77 with onboard RAID. My HDD are still on SATA2 mostly though.

I have a NAS 2 bays but the NAS raid do not recognise the Intel Raid array on my Gigabyte.

Any opinion?
