Pick from following:

1. Hanoi Hoan Kiem lake area (main tourist area) for sightseeing, shopping, chilling at cafes, marveling at horrible motorcycle traffic, and watching water puppet show.
2. Other attractions scattered around the city, like Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, Temple of literature, etc
3. Halung Bay - 2-3 days. Highly recommended if weather is good.
4. Sapa - 2-3 days. Trekking through mountain trails, villages, rice paddies. Only moderately physically demanding, but some trails are steep and can be slippery when wet.
5. Tam Coc (Ninh Binh) - Limestone formations. Day trip.

Many taxis are scams. Only take trusted taxis like Mai Linh. Watch out for pickpockets, esp in Hoan Kiem lake area.

If you have 5 days 4 nites in Hanoi, you can spend your time to cover the best sighseeing in the north such as: Hanoi, Halong bay, Sapa. You can do the tour as below:

- DAy 1: Hanoi arrival and sighseeing
- DAy 2: Halong bay 1 day
- DAy 3: Sapa
- DAy 4: Sapa
- DAy 5: go shopping - departure date

Sapa has lots of padi fields, the weather is cooling like genting

Also if u can, rent a scooter to go to the attractions. Silver gate and fansipan

You don't need a liscence to rent a bike. And it takes you to the nice places much faster

I think for 5 days, you can't go Sapa and Halong together, it will be very tight. You can only choose one. Both need to overnite.

Stay at old quarters area is better.
