i don't intend to overclock. main uses of the pc is to stream videos to my tv in another room, store and process raw photo files, and play dota 2 occasionally. having a small form factor would be a plus but not required.

read the pinned thread, looking at this system:

Intel Core i5 3470 & Asrock B75 PRO3 M
G.Skill DDR3-1600MHz 8GB (2X4GB)
Palit GTX 650Ti 1GB or Sapphire HD 7790
HDD 1TB
Samsung SATA 24X DVD Rewriter
FSP Raider 550W
Ikonik EN2
Total ~ $8XX

for the bolded, are those my best options? looking for a balance between reliability and price (i.e. i don't mind paying a couple dollars more if rma process/after sales service is better).

do i need haswell for future proofing or is ivy bridge sufficient? also, have i overdone/overkill any parts for my usage? recommendations are great, thanks in advance!

For ur usage, u can go for richland with FM2 mobo. Ram u only need single slot value ram & u dun even need to buy a gpu. Casing is up to u. If u go for richland psu can go for 450w is more than enough.

budget around 800-1000? the lower the better because it won't see much action as i have another desktop. i do want a discreet gpu just in case for games.

Most core components are under Corbell distro located at AMK, shouldn't be very far from Serangoon. Read a couple of positive feedback on their rma centre. :)

CPU & Mobo: i5-4570 & MSI B85M G43 @ $372
Ram: G.Skill 1600mhz value ram 8GB @ $74
ODD: Samsung DVD RW @ $22
HDD: WD Blue 1TB @ $80
GPU: MSI 7770 1GB @ $179
Case: Silverstone SG02 @ $92
PSU: Seasonic S12 520W @ $89

Total: $908
Buy and build at Tradepac.

Great recommendation. Definitely looking into this. Cheers.

BTW, what's the difference between WD Black and Blue? I read that there are speed differences, will it be noticable?

i was actually reading that the MSI B85M G43 has 6 ports

am i right to say that if i use the silverstone sg02, only 4 will be utilized?

edit: nvm, i read "front i/o" i assume that the back will have some as well depending on the board...

Blue if iirc it has lower cache than the black. 16mb against 64mb.

nippp0n: got recommendation for wifi?

Wifi i recommend you getting a mini pcie aka pcie x1 slot. Buy those dual band type.

Cause if you are using fibre for internet in future this is a good move. Once your router is on dual band, you can take advantages on the bandwidth. I dont recommend using usb adapter.
