Hi,

my old seagate HDD is showing an error in HD Tune

Spin Retry Count

Current = 100, Worst = 99, Threshold =97, Data = 0, Status=OK

are these values bad? Signs of disaster pending?

Look like got mechanical problem.

Do backup your data and then do a full error scan for bad sectors.

Trying not to back up unless needed :(
The data not important but troublesome to re-install the programs.

Some websites say such readings are normal.

100, 100, 97, 0 supposed to be default but I have
100, 99, 97, 0

Very confused.

If reinstalling the programs is too troublesome, then just clone the entire HDD to the new HDD.

"Spin Retry Count" is actually a critical value that is a potential indicator of imminent electromechanical failure, and should be heeded with extreme caution.

but isn't it weird since Data = 0 yet still warning? maybe try other tools besides hdtune, eg seatools?

The raw value of Data differs from manufacturer to manufacturer and sometimes from different products of the same manufacturer too. It is better to refer to the Current, Worst and Threshold values as they are calculated from current and past values of Data respectively.

but if data is 0, how can 0 be interpreted differently...?

Can. Some values either have a +offset or -offset, some multiply or divide by some offset.

But after application of their inhouse formula, the values for Current, Worst, Threshold will be standard in S.M.A.R.T.

gud to know abt offset, thx :). but as layperson, hard to imagine they'd program an offset & formula instead of using a simple 0,1,2,3 count...

Backup impt data in cloud. Do not do a HDD scan as this may kill the HDD sooner. Take note of OS s/n. Looks for deal for SDD. Port over.
