Hi Guys,

As I'm quite noob with IT I need your kind advice. I am using a 4 year old ASUS N76VZ laptop, it has 2 storage slots, one of which has a 1TB HDD that came with purchase, other slot is empty. I am thinking of shifting this 1TB to that slot and add a new Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD (buying in a few days time) into this primary slot. I also want to upgrade the current OS to Win 10.

I had previously opened up the back of the laptop, and basically know how to physically make the above changes. But once done, I'm clueless about the software part and which sequence of steps I should take. I thought of the below (totally clueless just thinking so please advice):

1: Re-partition back the 1TB HDD into one partition to simplify things (now is Drive C + D), though I'm not sure how to do this yet.

2. Copy out important files, onto another external HDD (Don't have, need to buy one?)

3. Format everything???

4. Connect SSD externally via USB first to make a image through a software from Samsung website?

5. Physically switch 1TB HDD to secondary slot, and add SSD to Primary slot. (I can do this)

6. Start laptop, at BIOS, change boot drive to SSD.

5. Upgrade to win 10.

Remove 1tb. Install windows 10 on ssd. Reinsert 1tb and delete the old c drive. If u want 1 partition means your d drive need to delete. If no extra hdd then too bad

If you do not want to do a clean install, then clone your hdd to your ssd before upgrading to windows 10. If u wan to do clean install, install the OS your ssd then backup your data from the 1TB before repartitioning the 1TB as a storage drive.

Repartitioning will wipe out all the data on the existing partition(s).

In any case, I suggest you get an external HDD to backup your data before doing anything else.

u can download free backup software like easeus todo backup which can determine the amount of space u need to backup to say an external hdd. u shud hv an external hdd nowadays to backup ur files and 1TB ext hdd are actually very affordable at less than $90.

fopr example, i have a 320GB ext hdd (from yrs back) but my current laptop hdd is 1TB. end up i needed less than 200GB to backup my files.

u can refer to the following guide by HWZ:
