Hi all.

My desktop suddenly chu stunt when using like 5min after start up.

jPpslyt.jpg

it went grey screen n froze. then restart shows these green vertical streaks. Load windows and the login screen has those horizontal streaks. Keyed in password and a black/blank screen loaded and nth else visually changed.

Asked around and it seems like my graphic card died. Like to seek more opinions if That's indeed the case. I have no onboard graphics N spare card so I can't test that.

If so, could I have some suggestions or recommendations on what card to buy?

Usage wise, steam gaming the most bah. Not sure need how good graphic card. Budget wise, most bang for bucks?

Thanks!!!

Ok, like that den no choice but to conclude that gpu is faulty. What games u play? Be more specific instead of steam games though. It ranges frm metal slug to tomb raider.

So is highly likely is gpu spoilt in my case?

Eh my steam now only got l4d. Hahaha. Can't even rmb if it is 1 or 2.

More possible use will be programming but I think that is dependent on ram right?

Not sure still gt what usage need fast n solid gpu except gaming. Photoshop illustration these need?

Yo, that GT 730 is a downgrade, man. I would rather go to lazada.com and spend $189 on a Zotac GTX 660 Synergy Edition and play L4D at a screen tearing 160+ FPS, and also use the GPU acceleration feature in both Photoshop and Illustrator to leverage the computing power of the GTX 660 to render images faster by using the GPU to do the rendering instead of the CPU.

Your HD 6870 has similar GPU power as a GTX 750/GTX 650Ti or a R7 260/260X. Also, PCI-E techonology are reverse compatible. As long as your mobo has a PCI-E X16 slot, any modern GPU can be used.

Most bang for buck should be the Zotac GTX 660 Synergy Edition (189), Sapphire/Powercolor R9 280 Dual-X/Turboduo (285), Zotac GTX 970 Twin Fan (448) and if you do not mind the heat and power draw, MSI R9 290X Gaming (499). Prices of the R9 290X might fall further, R9 290/290X GPUs are rather cheap in the USA right now.

Looks likely that your GPU uplorry. However, to double confirm on this, know anyone with a desktop? Try to ask them to lend you their GPU for a day. (Doesn't matter if it is some crappy ancient entry level GPU, as long as it is a discrete GPU.)

If you do not know anyone who has one, can try to give Nigel a call/PM/post and ask him to lend you any old GPU for a day, he might lend you one.

The offer for the Zotac GTX 660 is at lazada.com only.

As long as the ancient GPU uses a PCI-E X16 interface, it will work. It will only not work if it uses an ancient AGP interface, which should be extinct by now.
