I just received a custom built PC from my cousin as he built from extra parts he had. The only problem now is that there is no OS installed.

Now the issue and my question is..

- I have received these from a colleague.
- Dell Windows 8.1 CD
- Dell Windows 8 Key

Can I use this to install and activate it on my PC? Because as I saw somewhere online, OEM companies like Dell are unique and will only activate on Dell hardware.

I'm open to any suggestion regarding this matter, it would be of great help.
Thanks in advanced!

Installation may halt along the way.

Download windows 8 ISO and activate using your dell key.

If your colleague didn't use at all it should work

Where he got the 'spare key' from? Microsoft already omitted the separate COA sticker on branded PCs since Windows 8 hence i was wondering

If he extracted using keyfinder then it will not work since these PC brand companies use master product key issued by Microsoft and requires BIOS with SLIC 2.2 and key preinstalled inside.

Otherwise, if it indeed is a legit unused product key, you should download and install using Windows 8 x64 OEM ISO.

It's a square paper inside a plastic with a sticker sealed with "Do Not Discard".

There were other few unsealed ones but he labelled it with a sticker of the service tag he activated it on. This was the only sealed one which he said it should work. So if it is valid, downloading a Win8.1 iso and using the product key would work?

If its Windows 8.1 then download Windows 8.1 ISO, Windows 8 for Windows 8 ISO, but ensure you are getting the OEM version ISO...
