This is a bit of an odd question, but can the latest external DVD drives still play VCD discs? Any recommendations? Or should I give up & hunt for obsolete models instead?

I went to Challenger but their sales staff couldn't confirm for the brands they have. Cash Converter did not have stocks.

My PC is Win7 while my laptop is Win8 if OS compatibility is a requisite. Not looking for standalone VCD or DVD players per se.

Am looking to convert some really old VCDs before such tools are abandoned for good. Thanks.

For those interested:

Went to SLS over the weekend. Only Asus optical drives lists VCD playback on its box; it has 2 models in retail.

The other brands I saw (Samsung, Transcend, Liteon) didn't mention supporting the format. Neither can the shopkeepers vouch for them, so caveat emptor.

HP, LG & Buffalo didn't have any stocks despite what the pricelist flyers said.
