Hi all. Im heading to hokkaido for a holiday from 14th march. Need advise on what to wear. I wanted to buy a decent winter boots but my mum insisted that sport shoes is enough. I have a down coat thats for -10 deg. So i think should be okay. I googled and it says the weather be like 1 deg during the timing of our holiday.

I have nothing for pants and shoes at the moment. Should i be worried? Or jeans and sport shoes should suffice?

You are going where in Hokkaido, doing what. How to advise without any details of you are going skiing or just shopping in Sapporo.

u should advise your mom against wearing sneakers/sports shoe, the road/pavement is still icy and slippery. go to uniqlo and get their thermal wear, dont forget scarf and glove. Alternative if you doing F&E, u can get them when u arrive.

between shoes & pants, I think pants more important

for pants, get those waterproof pants with inner fleece lining ... those will keep out the wind, water & keep you warm ... even without thermal inners

can get for Universal Traveller .. mayb $50-$70 ... i buy in HK Flower Market HKD 50, works just as fine, maybe just cutting not as good

sports shoe can still tahan unless u intend to trudge in snow ... walkways r usually cleared of snow, or use the underpass ... can be slippery on ice

I think if u are not going to walk on snow, sneakers shld still be OK. City areas and tourist spots are usually cleared of snow.
However, u may want to get wool socks to keep the feet warm. For me, my feet and hands are usually the ones that feels the most cold

She's super stubborn and insisted on sports shoe. I told her will be slippery but then she say its okay. Urghhh.
Btw i do not know the itinerary. Probably have one day visit the zoo for the penguins, and then other than that should be walking around. Musuem, shrines etc.

Better to still get shoes that are slightly waterproof, otherwise melted snow seeping into the feet is very uncomfortable.
