help: laptop ram upgrade

This is my laptop. Onboard should have 4gb soldered. The only available slot is inserted with 4gb. Total 8gb.

My usage is for Adobe suite and often use illustrator, indesign, photoshop, acrobat and occasionally Premier.

Question is how much ram is good for my usage? What's the max amount of ram that can go into the only available slot? Roughly how much $ is a stick of that recommended ram? Can i mix in ddr4 sodimm ram instead?

Max 8gb making it total of 12gb. You cannot mix with ddr4. Recommended is 16gb with SSD.

I have ssd.

Considering 16 (single) + 4 (onboard) = 20gb ram

But how much would it cost for 16gb?

Should i go sim lim or funan buy? Tmr actually quite free... But computer parts shops got open?

Not sure if your laptop can take 20gb.
Based on the image you attached, it seems like max ram is 10gb or 12gb so that leaves you with a single 8gb + 4gb onboard to max out at 12gb.

Because the old laptop is dated... That time probably only got 8gb ram? Or was it because the original os installed was 32 bit?

Is there any older bios that got ram limit?

It's because it literally says so, in the picture you posted at the start. Max memory is 10 or 12 gb. If you buy 16gb to slot in, maybe can work, but you want to take the chance? It's not going to be dual channel anyway. People recommend 16gb is because they implicitly assume 2x8gb for dual channel memory performance, but yours is not going to be the case. So why want waste money to try?

Regarding Adobe illustrator + Windows 10, will 12gb be good enough? Yesterday opened a few hundred mb file in illustrator it was very laggy. When I go task manager, ram used was only nearing 50%. So by right enough ram? Did the opened working file paged into scrap disk? My ssd got space though.

If ram not even fully utilised currently, at your 4gb set-up, that means that ram isn't the bottleneck right now. Is your Adobe installed on your SSD or HDD? If it's the latter, than that's the cause of the slowdown. 12gb is more than sufficient for normal work flows.

Are you sure it's an SSD? The online specs for the laptop of yours have no SSD installed. Did you manually swap out your HDD for an SSD or?

Else, I'm not sure why it's sluggish. Could be a dying disk drive? Maybe you can run a disk benchmark, and see what kind of speed you're getting on your disk drive. You can download Crystaldiskmark. An average sata 2.5inch ssd should give you around 3-400mb/s read and write, minimum. use the 1GB test file configuration

I removed hdd n put in ssd. Don't think the drive got problem.

In any case, where can i buy ram? Nowadays from sim lim Square, funan and/or challenger? Want to buy it tomorrow.

It takes only 4G or 8G ram. Best is to use 4G so notebook will run memory in dual channel speed.
