Help! Mbp not booting after update

Help help! My mbp is not booting up after updating. And no, very stupid I didn't do a backup. The screen reaches the apple logo but the bar is empty and doesn't progress a lot . It auto off by itself. How? I tried the shift button after chime but still cannot.... Help!

It sounded like the hdd has failed. Time to upgrade to a SSD!

Or you can probably use command R to try to do internet recovery to see if HDD is "verified" and whether its repairable, but you will probably need to erase your hdd to reinstall OSX. The other way would be to take out the HDD and use another mac to take out the data first before u do usb/internet recovery.

I was desperate last night and tried the command option P + R combo (i didn't know where this leads to) ...and it was the disk repair, restore from backup and other 2 options given to me. I took the restore option. But strangely the hard disk i attached for Time Machine only had 11 Dec as the latest backup with full OS. And on the Mac HD, there was another choice of restoring from HD and it had up to like 22 Dec 8pm with full OS. I took the backup from 21 Dec and Mac is working little faster now.

Does this mean my external Harddisk/Time Machine - there is something wrong as it only backup until 11 Dec only?

How to check if it's operating fine?

if 11 dec is the latest one, then its the latest one. something must have happened from 11th dec to now lor.

you can use the disk utility to check for bad sectors, or the proprietary software to check for SMART status etc. i know WD and seagate got such software free to download from their support sites.

my advice is to copy out all your important stuff, do a factory reinstall, then copy in your important stuff again.

You are right. It worked for two days and started to slow down drastically again. I rebooted and it won't boot up again. This time there is the Apple logo and status bar which progressed midway and then then all was replaced by the grey no entry sign.

I did another restore hoping to get in save out my stuff and go to sls for help . But strange I didn't get the option of choosing which date to restore from. What's going on? Now I don't even know what I'm restoring from. Sigh.... How to do factory reinstall? I don't have any discs with me.

Cannot , something is wrong. Restore is done but still cannot boot up. I brought to SLS. My battery is also bloated .

It might be too late to say this but I never ever give my HDDs a 2nd chance, the moment something like this happens, I will immediately get another HDD to replace and get my data over. Even the HDD subsequent turns out to be fine, it will just become a external HDD.

Shop tried to do restore but cannot, and then they tried to do clean install - still cannot. I bought a Samsung 850 evo 512 gb ssd for $229 plus shop charged me $150(new battery, 1yr warranty)+$80 (service charge of HD installation plus OS) . Did I get chop carrot?

Is 512gb enough for ssd? How much space do I need to for thumbdrive for new apple os installation software? In case I need to do this myself in the future...16gb or 32gb?

$80 for installing the hard disk and OS yup u got chopped for $80, the SSD price is +- there though, battery $150, if it can last 4-5 hrs, should be worth it since it has 1 year warranty too, some shops sell $100~ 3-6months warranty and u install urself at home iirc

bo bian lo, anyway installing the hdd itself also need torx screwdriver, but u can get 1 easily at $10 with other screwdrivers also

installing the OS is easy if u still have the disc, if not u can install from recovery by pressing option-command-R

i just sold and installed an ssd today for someone with a macbook pro(didnt install OS for him though), quite easy if u have the tools

If you clone the HDD to the new ssd, the recovery partition might not get cloned over. You can try to boot to recovery mode. If cannot means the recovery partition is missing. If you want to reformat, you will need to create a boot usb.

For apple OS, just need 8gb thumbdrive to create the boot drive. Online a lot of guides to follow.

Very strange... there is only one admin user right? I got the password to this but it doesn't allow me to change this admin user's name.

I must create another user name and make 2nd user the admin and then delete first admin user is that it?

And I have this existing Time machine right? Can I add on this new SSD to the TM without saving over/deleting past backups so that I can access them if I so wish? If yes, how to do ?

formatting won't help if yr disk has bad sectors...
