Help needed for external harddisk for Apple

I am using a 5 year old macbook and mac mini m1 chip. I need an external hard disk to store all my pictures, important documents and back up my files in case my macbook die on me. Reliability is important for me and this external hard disk wont be moving around alot. It will be 'stuck' on the desk.

Can someone recommend an external hard disk please that is reliable and compatible with Apple? I am looking at SSD or NVMe but I am not sure which to get.
