Help needed on upgrading

My pc recently died(power on but no signal to monitor)
Tried reseating everything(except CPU) and there is a lack of a beep code.
Question is, I intend to buy new mobo/cpu/gpu/psu and I was wondering I can reinstall windows on my HDD or do i have to get a new copy of windows, seeing as I don't want to get a new HDD.

Get an SSD instead.

if there's no post(startup beep - assuming you have casing speaker) then chances are its hardware related. Though its still possible that re-flashing bios might work.

If your motherboard support dual bios or re-flashing then try it, perhaps can still salvage your HDD.


another way is to get a new PC. In that new PC mount the old harddisk internally(or externally) and reuse/extract your old data.


OS issue:
If you have an original windows key and when you try and 'authenticate' and fails after you replaced your motherboard. Call windows(Singapore) and ask them supply you with new set of cd-key. Tell them that your motherboard has died and you had to replace and the cd-key doesn't work now(this is because the cd-key is tied to your motherboard, calling them will give you new set of key)

as long you have your original serial, you can just dl windows online and make your USB as a bootable drive(its faster than CD/DVD).

thanks! but after some consideration, I have decided to get a brand new pc, salvaging only the 2 hdds and cpu cooler.
The old OS from my old PC isn;t deleted yet, however, so would it cause a conflict with the new OS?(on a new SSD)

ok lets see what we can do.

you have 2 hdds and 1 new SSD in your new comp.


1) Install a your OS on your SSD. To prevent any confusion, do not mount the 2 hdds(you can but u have to able to tell which one is which. tip: You can by the sizing)

as stated below; use your USB as bootable drive and install your OS and if any serial problems call them.

Assuming all went well, you now can mount your 2 old HDDs.(if you didn't mount them)

to answer your question:

Yes it can. Because there's an OS installed on the HDD, the PC will automatically boot it if it manage to detect an installed OS on it and it will give u a bsod because of the wrong drivers installed(your old PC drivers).

Please make sure u go into bios first and make boot priority to your USB drive bootable OS or your OS DVD

After that, when you install your new OS on your SSD make sure to make your harddisk boot priority to your SSD. If not it will still boot your old HDD.

Once your done that, go into your new OS and then you can extract all your data from your old HDD. After you done that you now can reformat your old OS HDD and use it as storage....etc


PS: your old OS HDD will have this thing called system partition you can remove it by using CMD line

have a read on this: TeraByte Unlimited Knowledge Base (I used diskpart myself. Its all the way near the bottom. check your disk no. via disk management)

its not hard, just follow and make sure you select the correct drive.
