Hi, lately I noticed that my PC will freeze randomly when in windows. Sometimes my mouse cursor can still move but everything else is frozen. Other times mouse can’t move at all. When I do a hard restart, I can get past the memcheck screen but will get stuck after that. I will get the message that OS not found on boot device. Going in to BIOS to investigate I can still see my HDD is detected.

If I leave the PC off for a couple of hours and restart it then it will start up and able to go in to windows as per normal and I am able to use it for a while before it freezes again.

I suspect it is a HDD problem but wouldn’t I get a “delay write failure” notice instead of the whole PC freezing?

TIA!

My PC is quite old
CPU: Core2duo e4500
Graphics: Onboard
HDD: 4 HDDs bought over many years
Motherboard: Asus
Ram: 2gb Kingston ddr2
Power supply: Came with case, recently changed 1 year ago
OS: winXP

It could be ram, as of now , I'm working on my aunt PC having similar problems like yours. After booting with only ram module, everything seems to be much faster. But make sure to test the ram with memtest to be sure , also run a HDD test as well

Hi TS. Sounds like hdd issue as I had similar encounter years ago. However there could be other underlying factors to cause system to freeze. Try performing hard disk diagnostic scan and listen for any unusual noise or lag while reading or writing.

IMO, the culprit is most likely the RAM. I also had similar problem awhile ago like this, all smooth after i replace the RAM module ;)
