Hi everyone,

My PC of 3 years just died on me. Most likely the motherboard died.
Thinking of getting a new pc since my warranty just expired, can you help to recommend parts for a new build??

I will be reusing:

-Monitor (1080p)
-Peripherals(KB,Mouse,Speakers etc)
-SSD (with OS WIN 8.1)
-2x 7200rpm HDD

Don't think I can reuse the ram since it's DDR3.

Would prefer geforce cards and also 16GB ram min.

Primary usage will be for gaming (Skyrim, MMOs, etc) and watching movies/shows.

Budget: $1200(preferably less than 1k)

Thanks in advance!

You can still reuse ddr3 dimms if you going for Haswell. For skylake, some of the boards support ddr3l (technically ddr3, but lower voltage).

1) would personally reccomend Haswell (4460+ h81/b85 board) because performance difference between Haswell and Skylake in gaming is minimal, especially so when gpu bottleneck is not breached.

2) For gpu, since most of the time you play mmos;those games shouldn't be problem for gtx 950. Do you use alot of mods in skyrim?

3)PSU can look at Superflower leadex silver from Lazada now that stock's being replenished. Casing MATX will be fine for your usage. Jonsbo for you?

Hey there, thanks for the suggestions!

1) It does make sense for me to go with Haswell since I will be able to reuse my RAM. But I don't know it feels weird to spend money buying old tech haha.. I thought it may be better to buy Skylake for future-proof purposes. I don't usually change my PC under 5 years if it's working fine.

2) The games I'm playing currently is not too graphic-intensive. However i also would want to have the hardware ready to play new games which may come along without lag on medium-high settings.

3) I'm not too particular about cases, as long as the hot air blows from behind. The last time I went to get a nzxt case recommended by someone here I was unaware that the hot air blows out from the top. As the top of my PC slot on my computer desk is not open it resulted in very bad airflow. Might be what caused my PC to spoil so fast too :(
I will most probably get my parts from PC themes and assemble there since I am clueless about assembling =:p

Previously I ran some hardware monitoring tool and realised my hard disks temp were all about 50-80degrees consistently. Not sure was it due to bad air flow. Would getting extra fans help??
