Ryzen 5 3600 High CPU Idle Temp

Just realize my relatively new PC has an idle temp of ~55C

HWInfo64:

Circa 65C under load.

Should I be concerned? Default heatsink.

Looks kinda on a high side for idle and your CPU voltage nv drop below 1.33v? Did you overclock it and do your CPU drop the core speed during idle?

Here mine for comparison but I am on AIO, perhaps you can also consider getting an after market cooler to get some improvement on that temp.

Ok, I realize the issue is with the BIOS. Crap, I have been running on this setting several months now (RMA-ed once, not sure if it is due to this).

Currently:
1. Set Windows 10 power setting from "High Performance" to "Power Saver" and voltage dropped from 1.4+V to 0.925V

2. Set CPU fan curve to 100% all the time.

Results:

I will try update BIOS tomorrow morning and see if it resolves the issue.

Apparently this has been a well known issue: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/ryzen-5-3600-voltage.3499620/

1. Install the AMD chipset drivers. Use Ryzen Balanced power plan, not the Windows ones.
2. Uninstall MSI Dragon Center.

I just installed MSI dragon center yesterday to customize fan speed, wasn't installed when the idle temp issue happened.

That said, without MSI Dragon Center, what other fan speed software do you use/recommend?

You should be using the software that is intended for your motherboard. I am using a Gigabyte board and AIO cooler and use their software to control the CPU temp.

If you're using an air cooler it will be connecting to the motherboard. For AIO you have the option to connect to the motherboard OR USB connector.

i think your B450M is old version, fan control was removed from bios?
If not, better to use bios control fan. Only just need to install AMD drivers in windows, ignore dargon center.

Also in your bios, consider to disable your integrated sound, and just pipe USB audio to your DAC. To further clean up windows. :o

Indeed, my motherboard is old version, purchased mid last year and had to seek the help of SLS people to help flash mobo bios, and just realize there is a lot of challenge being an early adopter.

So I installed the latest AMD chipset driver (2020-04-16) directly from their website (even though I use software like Driver Easy frequently), suddenly this appeared in my power plan:

Definitely wasn't there before.

Next time I'd know that early adopters, really need to watch out for idle high temps and bios over-voting your CPU by mistake :(

Ok, after updating chipset driver:

MSI Dragon Fan control doesn't seem to work anymore:

But idle temperature and voltage more manageable:

Updating BIOS to see whether situation improves further.

I'm using default hsf and I'm getting similar temperatures. It's fine as it is, you want better temperatures you need to get 3rd party hsf.

Use BIOs to control fan speed, I also did so because MSI Dragon fan control doesn't seems to work for me.

Btw,on the topic of high idle temperature and CPU boost up even on most trivial load like web browsing which supposedly a feature of Ryzen 2 to be more responsive.

I am currently using the below custom power saving plan (More detail in the link) which does bring down the idle temp considerably and the CPU does not boost up so aggressively when I am just doing some web browsing etc.

This result in a more quiet system with less fan revving up sound, not to mention it still boost up to 4200mhz when in load. Can give it a try if the aggressive CPU behavior is bothering you.

Mine idle at about 70 plus for about 10 months. No issues at all. Don't worry about it.

90+ definitely

I see, the max recommended temp for Ryzen cpu is 95c but if you are are not running 24/7 on that temp then it should be fine.

For me I try to keep them as low as possible even as I did not plan to overclock the cpu for a quieter system.

That's an interesting data point. Thanks.

Seems like Ryzen is designed to operate at high thermals, and high voltage. Only time will tell if that will affect the longevity of it.

My last CPU (Intel i5-760, no overclock, Windows High Performance power plan for last 3-5 years) lasted me almost 10 years (before it died), but I had a custom cooler. Let's see how long this lasts.

Currently on latest BIOS (1.0.0.4; 2020-01-10), latest chipset driver (19.10.36;2020-04-16), Ram (A-XMP to 3200 MHz) Ryzen balanced power plan, and using more aggressive than default fan curve (default fan curve is very "forgiving").

Default Fan Curve:
tBL2xNJ.png

Current Fan Curve:
gPyEJIc.png

I trust that the Ryzen engineers know what they are doing when they set the default voltage that high. Idle temps are 40-45, gaming temps 50-60, high load can exceed 80+ (but very rare for my use case).

Current Setup (Idle):
dKoK6fe.png

Current Setup (Light Load; long Skype session)
IWr9a9z.png

Current Setup (High Load; Cinebench + Other Apps running in BG)

When my custom cooler comes, I might set it to Ryzen High performance permanently.

Thanks everyone for chiming in.
